Paul McCartney is no stranger to musical brilliance. From his groundbreaking work with The Beatles to his acclaimed solo career, he’s created some of the most iconic songs in music history. But even legends have moments of doubt.
One of McCartney’s most successful solo songs — a track now hailed as a classic — once left him second-guessing everything. In fact, he admitted he was scared of how it would be received.
🎹 A Solo Career Built on Bold Moves
After The Beatles disbanded, McCartney stepped into unfamiliar territory. Gone were the collaborative days of Lennon-McCartney. Instead, Paul found himself experimenting alone, often in his home studio with just a four-track recorder.

“It was a very bare album,” he recalled. His early solo work was stripped down, raw, and deeply personal — a far cry from the polished sound fans had come to expect. Some loved the vulnerability; others weren’t sure what to make of it.
Yet in that creative solitude, McCartney would go on to craft some of his most heartfelt material. Still, even he couldn’t always tell which songs would land — and which might miss the mark.
💔 The Song That Made McCartney Nervous
Of all his solo tracks, “My Love” made McCartney pause.
A romantic ballad overflowing with emotion, “My Love” was written for his wife, Linda. But its open-hearted sincerity gave him second thoughts.
“I remember being particularly scared of ‘My Love,’” McCartney later admitted. “It was a sort of zany thing — but it’s alright now.”
Far from zany, the song struck a chord. Released in 1973, “My Love” quickly became a No. 1 hit in the U.S. and remains one of the most beloved love songs in his discography.
🤹♂️ When Confidence Falters — Even for a Beatle
McCartney has spoken candidly about feeling like some of his solo work was “overdone” — not just musically, but visually as well.
“There were a couple where I thought, ‘Oh my God, they’ve over-made me up,’” he joked. “I wanted to look natural and I look like someone out of vaudeville.”
Still, with time, McCartney came to appreciate those snapshots of his past.
“Even that stuff looks alright. It’s got a vintage quality… it’s like an old photo album. I think it has quite a warm quality in the end.”
🌟 Vulnerability as a Superpower
What may have once felt like creative overreach has aged into something deeper. McCartney’s willingness to wear his heart on his sleeve — even when he wasn’t sure how it would be received — is part of what has made his solo work endure.
“My Love” is no longer a risky experiment. It’s a timeless anthem of devotion, proving that even legends doubt themselves — and that sometimes, leaning into vulnerability is the most powerful move of all.
