Season 23 of American Idol wrapped up on May 18, with 27-year-old Jamal Roberts taking home the crown after a whopping 26 million votes were cast. He edged out 18-year-old Louisiana native John Foster, who finished as runner-up, and Breanna Nix, who came in third. But if American Idol history has taught us anything, it’s that you don’t have to win to have a successful career in music.
Just look at icons like Jennifer Hudson (7th place, Season 3), Adam Lambert (runner-up, Season 8), and Chris Daughtry (4th place, Season 5)—all of whom carved out major careers after their Idol runs. Season 23 appears to be no different, already launching several standout contestants into promising musical futures.
One of the brightest young stars to emerge from this season is 17-year-old Slater Nalley, a high school student from Atlanta, Georgia. From the moment his audition aired, Nalley won hearts with his soulful, classic country tone and stage presence far beyond his years. He made it all the way to the Top 5 before being eliminated during the May 12 episode, following his performances of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” and “Born to Be Wild.” Still, that night was far from the end of the road for Slater.
Just days after his elimination, it was announced that Slater had signed an artist management deal with Play It Again Music—a major move for the rising star. The company is led by country hitmaker Dallas Davidson, who has co-written chart-topping songs for Luke Bryan, Lady A, and Brooks & Dunn.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Davidson welcomed Slater to the PIA family, praising the young singer’s raw talent, grounded personality, and strong character. “Slater carries himself like a seasoned music veteran,” he wrote. “He’s going to have an immediate impact in music—not just in the country genre but globally.”
Slater himself shared how grateful he was for his Idol journey and how inspired he feels to create music that speaks to people. With a clear vision and a strong team behind him, his next chapter is already underway.
While Jamal Roberts’ win will be remembered as one of the most powerful in Idol history, and John Foster continues building buzz in the country music world, Slater Nalley is proof that making the Top 5 can be just the beginning. With a new team, a growing fanbase, and a voice that resonates, Slater’s musical journey is only getting started.
