“THE WORDS OF A HEARTBROKEN MOTHER ARE LEAVING PEOPLE IN TEARS.”

The family of James ‘Weston’ Higginbotham is mourning an unimaginable loss after the 20-year-old college student was found dead in a mountainous area outside Kyoto, bringing a heartbreaking end to a week-long search.

Weston disappeared on May 29 while visiting Japan with his family. For days, relatives, volunteers, and search teams desperately hoped he would be found safe. Instead, on June 6, the family received the devastating news that a volunteer search-and-rescue team had located his body in the mountains outside the city.

In an emotional statement shared online, Weston’s mother, Nancy Higginbotham, expressed the overwhelming grief her family is now facing.

“The grief we feel is impossible to put into words,” she wrote.

She went on to describe Weston as a cherished son whose loss has left a void that cannot be measured, saying the family is struggling to imagine life without him.

During the search, family members had worked tirelessly to locate Weston. Authorities, volunteers, helicopters, police officers, and local supporters searched difficult terrain surrounding Kyoto, particularly the heavily wooded mountain regions near the Yamashina area where he was last believed to have traveled.

The search became even more challenging due to severe weather conditions.

Heavy rain and difficult mountain terrain complicated rescue efforts, forcing teams to navigate slippery trails and dense forests while trying to locate any sign of the missing student. Throughout the ordeal, supporters from both Japan and the United States followed developments closely and shared messages of encouragement.

According to the family, they were initially able to track portions of Weston’s movements through a location-sharing application. Investigators later focused their attention on remote mountainous areas where they believed he may have gone after becoming separated from his family.

As the search continued, hope remained.

His mother repeatedly thanked supporters for their prayers and assistance, holding onto the possibility that Weston would be found alive. Sadly, that hope ended with the discovery made by volunteer rescuers.

Following the heartbreaking news, Nancy expressed gratitude to the countless people who helped search for her son.

“The outpouring of kindness and support has carried us through the darkest days of our lives,” she wrote.

Her message thanked everyone who shared information, assisted with search efforts, offered prayers, and stood beside the family during the difficult days of uncertainty.

The circumstances surrounding Weston’s death have not yet been fully explained publicly, and authorities have not released a cause of death. As a result, many questions remain unanswered while officials continue their work.

For now, however, the focus remains on remembering a young man whose life ended far too soon.

Friends and family describe Weston as someone deeply interested in nature, sustainability, and the world around him. Those who knew him are choosing to remember his curiosity, his passion, and the positive impact he had on the people in his life.

As they begin navigating the difficult days ahead, the Higginbotham family has asked for privacy while mourning their son.

And across both the United States and Japan, many people continue to keep them in their thoughts as they face an unimaginable loss. 💔
