What began as a quiet Sunday evening in Canoga Park, Los Angeles, ended in heartbreak after a father and his 10-year-old twin sons were found dead inside their home following reports of gunfire. Police are now investigating the case as an apparent murder-suicide, leaving neighbors, friends, and the wider community struggling to understand how a family celebration could end in such devastation.
Authorities said emergency crews were called to the 8000 block of Owensmouth Avenue at around 7:15 p.m. after reports of shots fired inside a residence. When firefighters and paramedics arrived, they found three people dead at the scene. The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed the deaths, while the Los Angeles Police Department later said the children’s father is believed to have been responsible before taking his own life.
The tragedy unfolded near Lanark Park, a place usually filled with families, children, and people enjoying a peaceful evening. But within minutes, the area was surrounded by police vehicles, fire trucks, and emergency crews. Residents watched as officers blocked off the apartment complex and detectives entered the home to begin collecting evidence.
Aerial footage from the scene showed a heavy law enforcement presence outside the property, with emergency vehicles lining the street as investigators worked late into the night. For many people nearby, the sudden arrival of so many officers created fear and confusion before the heartbreaking details slowly began to emerge.
Neighbors said the area is normally calm, which made the incident even harder to process. Some people had been outside near the park when they noticed police and emergency crews rushing toward the apartment complex. What they later learned left many of them shaken, especially because two young children were among the victims.
One woman who witnessed the scene told KABC that the loss was almost impossible to put into words. She said it was deeply painful to think about two children and their father losing their lives inside one home, calling it a tragedy that no family should ever experience.
Another resident, CC Pelkey, told KTLA5 that her heart was breaking for the family. She said the children never had the chance to grow up and questioned why help could not have been reached before things ended this way. Her words reflected what many neighbors were feeling: sadness, confusion, and disbelief.
As news spread through the neighborhood, some people gathered near the scene to pray and pay their respects. Even those who did not personally know the family said they felt moved to stand nearby, hoping in some small way to show love, support, and compassion for the victims and their loved ones.
Investigators remained at the home for hours as they worked to understand what happened before the deadly incident. Officials have not released a motive, and the case remains under active investigation. Police are continuing to examine the circumstances that led to the deaths of the father and his two sons.
The heartbreaking case has added to concerns about recent domestic tragedies in Los Angeles County, coming only weeks after another family was lost in a separate murder-suicide investigation. For now, the Canoga Park community is left grieving two young lives gone far too soon, while waiting for answers that may never fully explain the pain left behind.
