Muscatine Community Honors McFarland Family as Funeral Plans and Support Fund Are Announced

The Muscatine community is coming together in grief after one of the most devastating tragedies the city has faced in recent memory. In the days since the McFarland family was lost, neighbors, friends, and even strangers have looked for ways to show support, offer comfort, and stand beside the families left behind.

Authorities said 52-year-old Ryan McFarland killed six members of his family before taking his own life after a confrontation with police. The victims were identified as Lisa McFarland, 51, Dakota Whitlow, 32, Austin Harris, 29, Riley McFarland, 20, Mark McFarland, 16, and Ryan McFarland Jr., 13.

Their deaths have left a deep wound across Muscatine, where many people knew the family or knew someone connected to them. Six lives are gone, and the community is now trying to process the kind of loss that leaves behind more questions than answers.

Funeral services for the McFarland family have now been announced. The service honoring five members of the McFarland family will be held next Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Mary and Matthias Catholic Church in Muscatine.

Separate services are being held for Dakota Whitlow and Austin Harris. Dakota’s memorial service was held this week, with a celebration of life expected at a later date. No public arrangements have been announced yet for Austin Harris.

In Dakota’s honor, memorial donations can be made to the Muscatine Center for Social Action, which supports a local domestic abuse shelter. The cause has taken on even more meaning as the community reflects on the pain and impact of the tragedy.

The Community Foundation of Greater Muscatine has also created a direct support fund for the families affected by the shooting. Donations can be made through the foundation’s website, giving people a clear way to help those now facing unimaginable grief.

For many in Muscatine, the question has been how to respond when words are not enough. Now, the answer is becoming clearer: attend the services, support the fund, help the families, and make sure those grieving know they are not alone.

In the days after the shooting, residents created memorials filled with flowers, candles, photos, and handwritten messages. Even in the rain, people came out to stand together, showing that the community would not turn away from the pain.

Riley McFarland had just graduated from college, and Ryan McFarland Jr. was only 13 years old. Their futures, along with the lives of the others lost, ended far too soon. Muscatine is grieving, but through its support, its prayers, and its willingness to show up, the city is making one thing clear: the McFarland family will not be forgotten.
