McDonald’s Worker Speaks From Hospital Bed After Co-Worker Allegedly Throws Hot Oil During Shift

A normal shift at a McDonald’s in Yuba City, California, turned into a terrifying ordeal for 20-year-old Jacob Smith after a co-worker allegedly threw scalding hot oil on him without warning. More than a week later, Jacob remains hospitalized as his family tries to understand why the attack happened at all.

The incident happened on May 30 while Jacob was working in the back office of the restaurant. According to his family, he was preparing to count money when he noticed something from the corner of his eye, turned around, and was suddenly hit with the hot oil.

Jacob was rushed to the hospital with serious burns to multiple parts of his body. His injuries were severe enough that he was admitted to the ICU, where doctors have continued treating him and monitoring his pain.

His mother, Amber Smith, described the attack as a nightmare that began during what should have been an ordinary day at work. In an online fundraiser created to help with medical costs, she shared how quickly her son’s life changed in a matter of seconds.

For Amber, one of the most painful moments came when Jacob looked at her from his hospital bed and asked why someone would do that to him. The question has stayed with her, especially because the family still does not have a clear answer.

Police have not publicly identified a motive for the alleged attack. Jacob’s family says he does not understand what led to it, making the situation even harder as he focuses on recovery.

The accused co-worker has been identified as 23-year-old Jalani Bluett. Authorities said he left the restaurant after the incident and was later located, arrested, and charged with multiple felonies, including battery causing serious bodily injury.

Jacob’s recovery is expected to be difficult. His mother said the pain has been intense, and doctors are working to treat the burns while trying to reduce the need for more serious procedures.

Jacob is also engaged to be married, making the attack even more devastating for his loved ones as they think about the future he was building before everything changed. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help cover medical bills and lost income while he remains hospitalized.

Amber said she is not asking for revenge, but she does want accountability. As Jacob continues healing in the ICU, his family is still left with the same painful question he asked from his hospital bed: why would someone do this to him?
