American Idol Season 2 may have aired more than two decades ago, but Clay Aiken says the bond between the contestants has never really disappeared. The runner-up from the show’s 2003 season revealed that many of the cast members still keep in touch today.
Aiken shared the update during an appearance on the Classic Conversations podcast with Jeff Dwoskin on June 14. While talking about his Idol experience, he explained that the contestants from his season remain connected through a private group chat.
For Aiken, that connection makes perfect sense. He said it would be hard for anyone to go through such an intense and life-changing experience without becoming close to the people who shared it with them.
Season 2 of American Idol was one of the seasons that helped turn the show into a major cultural phenomenon. Millions of viewers followed the competition as Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken became two of the most talked-about contestants of the year.
Studdard ultimately won the season, while Aiken finished as runner-up. But despite the competition and the attention around the finale, the two went on to build a friendship that lasted far beyond the show.
Aiken said the entire season is still connected in some way. More than 20 years later, he said they still have a message thread where contestants can check in, send birthday wishes, and share updates from their lives.
He also explained that their conversations are not usually about business or careers. Instead, the group mostly talks about family, personal milestones, and the kinds of everyday moments that close friends share.
The only time work usually comes up, Aiken said, is when someone is touring and another former contestant happens to be nearby. In those moments, old Idol friends sometimes show up to support each other.
That happened during Aiken and Studdard’s joint tour in 2023, which marked the 20th anniversary of their season. The tour brought the two longtime friends back together onstage and also reunited them with several familiar faces from Season 2.
Among those who reconnected during that period were Julia DeMato, Charles Grigsby, Carmen Rasmussen, and Vanessa Olivarez. Aiken said those reunions felt natural, as if very little time had passed.
He described them as the kind of friends who can sit down and immediately start remembering old moments. Even after 23 years, he said they can talk and laugh together like the experience happened yesterday.
Aiken and Studdard’s friendship has remained one of the strongest connections from that Idol era. The two have continued working together, touring together, and appearing together long after their season ended.
In 2024, they also competed side by side on The Masked Singer, giving fans another chance to see their chemistry and friendship on display. Their bond has become one of the most lasting stories to come from American Idol’s early years.
Aiken said he loves working with Studdard and being around him. He described the Idol winner as more than a former competitor, calling him his brother.
Their continued friendship shows how deeply American Idol shaped the lives of the people who lived through it. For Season 2 fans, Aiken’s update is a reminder that behind the votes, performances, and famous finale, the contestants built something that has lasted long after the cameras stopped rolling.
