Instructors Claim “Blackout” After 21-Year-Old Is Launched From Bridge Without Safety Rope

Three instructors charged in the death of 21-year-old Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas are facing growing scrutiny after investigators said they offered the same strange explanation for how she was launched from a bridge without the main safety rope attached.

Maria Eduarda died during a rope-jumping activity at the Skeleton Bridge in Limeira, São Paulo, after workers allegedly released her from the structure without securing the cord that was supposed to protect her. The bridge is about 130 feet high, and the incident has triggered outrage across Brazil and beyond.

The three men charged in the case have been identified as Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff, 32, Maicon Fernandes Cintra, 42, and Vitor de Freitas Gonçalves, 27. Authorities have accused them of homicide with eventual intent, a Brazilian legal concept involving acceptance of a serious risk.

According to reports, the activity was not a traditional solo bungee jump but a rope-jump style launch in which Maria Eduarda was lifted and released by instructors. Witness footage reportedly showed the unused safety rope still on the platform as bystanders realized something had gone wrong.

The explanation the suspects gave investigators has now become one of the most discussed parts of the case. During questioning, the instructors reportedly said they could not remember who was responsible for attaching the rope or how the final safety check was missed.

In some accounts, the men described experiencing a “blackout” after the fatal mistake. That claim has raised even more questions because investigators are trying to determine whether the failure was panic, negligence, lack of procedure, or something else entirely.

Reports also say two of the instructors fled the scene after realizing what had happened. They were later found in a wooded area near the bridge with the help of a military helicopter.

That alleged attempt to flee has become a key part of the investigation. For authorities, the question is not only how the rope was missed, but also why some of the people involved left the scene instead of remaining to assist investigators and emergency responders.

Six people were initially detained after the incident, but three were later released. The three instructors accused of being directly involved in the jump remain the focus of the criminal case.

Investigators are also looking into a missing camera that Maria Eduarda reportedly carried or wore during the jump. Several reports say the GoPro-style or 360-degree camera has not been recovered, despite its potential importance to the case.

One report said a worker was allegedly seen removing the camera after the fall, though authorities have not publicly confirmed where the device is now. If recovered, it could help clarify what happened in the final moments before Maria Eduarda was released.

The operation itself is also under scrutiny. Reports say participants were charged for jumps and optional video recordings, while safety experts have criticized the lack of basic double-check procedures before the launch.

One woman who had been scheduled to jump before Maria Eduarda reportedly backed out because she was afraid. Moments later, Maria Eduarda took part in the activity and suffered the fatal fall, a detail that has made the timeline even more haunting for those following the case.

The instructors’ defense has argued that the death was a tragic accident rather than intentional wrongdoing. Their lawyer has said the men were experienced and disputed the homicide charges, but investigators continue to examine whether the risk was obvious enough to support the accusation.

Maria Eduarda’s death has left her family grieving and the public demanding answers. What began as an adventure activity has now become a criminal case centered on a missed rope, a missing camera, an alleged escape, and a “blackout” explanation that has only made the tragedy harder to understand.
