The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie has taken another painful turn after newly revealed reporting described a message that may be the one her family feared most.
Nancy, the 84-year-old mother of Today host Savannah Guthrie, vanished from her Tucson, Arizona, home on February 1, 2026. Nearly five months later, she has still not been found.
According to new reports, investigators reviewed multiple ransom messages connected to the case, including one that allegedly claimed Nancy had died after she was taken. The reported message has added a devastating new layer to an already heartbreaking investigation.
The first ransom note reportedly arrived shortly after Nancy disappeared and demanded millions of dollars in Bitcoin. It allegedly described her as alive but frightened, while also including specific details that made investigators take the message seriously.
That note reportedly demanded $4 million in Bitcoin, with the amount rising if the deadline passed. Investigators allegedly chose not to send the full amount and instead transferred a small test payment in an effort to trace the crypto wallet.

The small payment reportedly remained untouched. Some reports now suggest that decision may have caused whoever sent the message to suspect law enforcement was trying to track them.
Days later, a second message reportedly arrived with a much darker claim. According to Page Six and other outlets citing new reporting, the message allegedly included an apology and suggested Nancy had died.
Other outlets have reported conflicting details about the exact wording and whether the message demanded more money. Vulture noted that Air Mail reported an apology and possible demand related to returning Nancy’s body, while NBC News reported a death claim but not the same additional details.
That uncertainty is part of what has made the case so difficult to follow. Officials have not publicly confirmed every detail of the reported notes, and Nancy’s whereabouts remain unknown.
Still, the reported second message appears to have changed how many people viewed the investigation. What began as a suspected kidnapping case now carries the added fear that authorities may be dealing with something even more tragic.
Nancy was last known to be at her home in the Catalina Foothills area near Tucson. Authorities previously said they believed she did not leave voluntarily, and her home was treated as part of a serious investigation.
The FBI later released security footage showing a masked individual near Nancy’s home, and investigators searched areas around the property and nearby roads. A reward was also offered for information connected to her recovery or those responsible.
Savannah Guthrie and her siblings publicly pleaded for their mother’s return in an emotional video, telling whoever had her that they were willing to pay. Their message showed the family’s desperation as they tried to keep hope alive.
The case has also been complicated by possible hoaxes and conflicting ransom claims. Reports say some messages were treated as suspicious or false, while others were viewed as more credible because of details they included.
Nearly five months later, there is still no confirmed public answer about what happened to Nancy Guthrie. No official suspect has been identified, and the family remains trapped between hope, fear, and the painful uncertainty created by the reported messages.
For Savannah and her family, the newly revealed claim is not closure. It is another agonizing development in a case filled with unanswered questions, as investigators continue searching for the truth about where Nancy is and who took her.
