Country singer Rory Feek has shared an emotional family update as his 12-year-old daughter, Indiana “Indy” Feek, prepares to undergo open-heart surgery in Austin, Texas.
Indiana is the daughter Rory shared with his late wife and Joey + Rory singing partner, Joey Feek, who died in 2016 after a battle with cancer. For fans who have followed the family for years, this latest update has felt deeply personal.
Rory revealed the news in a heartfelt blog post titled “bless her heart,” explaining that Indiana’s surgery was scheduled for Wednesday morning at Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin.
The procedure is meant to repair a ventricular septal defect, also known as a VSD, which is a hole in the heart that Indiana has had since birth. Rory said he and Joey first learned about the condition when Indiana was still an infant.
At first, doctors hoped the hole might close on its own as she grew older. Rory said the family continued monitoring it through regular heart checkups over the years.
But the defect never fully closed. According to Rory, it has not grown larger, but it has begun to cause complications that doctors now believe need to be addressed sooner rather than later.
Rory wrote that Indiana looks healthy and happy on the outside, but she often gets winded more easily than other children when running and playing. Her cardiologist explained that the condition is not immediately life-threatening, but could affect her quality and length of life if left untreated.
The surgery is expected to take six to seven hours. After that, Indiana is expected to spend about a week in intensive care before beginning a longer recovery at home.
Rory also shared the hardest part for him as a father: helping Indiana prepare emotionally for something so serious. He described tearful moments with his daughter as she told him she did not want the surgery and wanted a miracle instead.
Rather than hiding the fear, Rory wrote honestly about it. He said the family is still praying for a miracle while also preparing for the medical care Indiana needs.
The update quickly touched fans because Rory’s life with Indiana has been public in a very tender way. Many first came to know her as the little girl Joey loved so deeply, and they have watched Rory raise her through faith, music, grief, and family changes.
Rory said one reason the family is in Texas is because of Indiana’s medical care. After visiting children’s hospitals earlier this year, they decided on Dell Children’s Medical Center, where he praised the surgical team caring for her.
He also said they will be surrounded by friends, family, and community during the hospital stay and recovery. That support appears to be one of the things helping Indiana face the difficult days ahead.
Fans responded with prayers, encouragement, and messages of love for Indiana. For many, the update was not just about surgery; it was about a father trying to stay strong while watching his daughter face something frightening.
Now, supporters are waiting with Rory as Indiana enters the next step of her medical journey. The road ahead may be difficult, but Rory’s message made one thing clear: Indy is not facing it alone.
