Lionel Richie’s new tour was supposed to begin with celebration, but opening night quickly turned into a moment of concern for fans.
The 77-year-old music icon was performing at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota, on June 24 when he suddenly began feeling unwell during his set.
The show marked the first night of Richie’s “Sing a Song All Night Long” tour with Earth, Wind & Fire, making the unexpected interruption even more alarming for longtime supporters.
Fans first noticed something was wrong nearly an hour into the concert, when Richie sat down during “Dancing on the Ceiling” and tried to keep the mood light with a joke about feeling dizzy.
Even though he appeared to be struggling, Richie continued for a short time and moved to the piano to perform “Three Times a Lady.”
Not long after that, he left the stage, and the audience was told there would be an unexpected intermission.
At first, many fans believed Richie would return after a short break and finish the concert as planned.
But after a long wait, saxophonist Dino Soldo came out and told the crowd that Richie was not feeling well enough to continue the performance.
The announcement immediately sparked concern inside the arena, and videos from the concert quickly began circulating online as fans asked whether Richie was okay.
Reports later said Richie was taken to a local hospital as a precaution, though no detailed official medical diagnosis was immediately released.
Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris reportedly suggested that Richie may have been dealing with mild dehydration, offering some hope that the scare was not more serious.
Still, the moment was especially emotional because it happened at the very start of a major tour that fans had been eagerly waiting to see.
The incident also brought renewed attention to Richie’s past health struggles, including serious vocal cord problems in the 1990s that once threatened his singing career.
Richie later revealed that those issues were eventually linked to diet-related acid reflux, but the experience left him fearing he might lose the voice that made him a legend.
Now, fans are hoping the opening-night scare was only temporary, as messages of love and support continue pouring in for Richie from people who simply want to know that he is safe and recovering.
