The Saturday Night Live Season 51 finale delivered plenty of memorable moments, but Paul McCartney had even more music waiting after the televised portion of the show ended.
After the broadcast, McCartney remained in Studio 8H and performed additional Beatles classics for the cast and audience. The surprise performances included “Help!” and “Drive My Car,” extending an already memorable night.
McCartney was joined by Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, who had already been part of the evening’s festivities. Singer Ingrid Michaelson also joined the musicians for the bonus performances.
Then came the moment that added an unmistakably SNL twist. Will Ferrell stepped onto the stage during “Help!” and picked up a cowbell, bringing back the spirit of his famous “More Cowbell” sketch.
The unexpected combination of a Beatles legend, a Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer, and one of SNL’s most recognizable comedy performers created a scene that felt more like an impromptu rock party than a television performance.
For fans watching the original broadcast, the extra songs offered something they had not seen during the main televised set. The post-credits footage later gave audiences around the world a chance to experience those additional performances.
The finale had already been significant for McCartney. Earlier in the episode, he performed songs from his then-upcoming album as well as Wings material and “Coming Up,” the song that had a particularly meaningful connection to SNL.
The bonus performances shifted the focus back toward McCartney’s Beatles legacy, allowing the cast and audience inside Studio 8H to hear two songs that date back to the group’s legendary era.
What made the moment especially memorable was its spontaneity. Rather than simply ending his appearance when the cameras stopped, McCartney continued performing and sharing the music with everyone still in the room.
More than six decades after those Beatles songs first became part of music history, McCartney was still capable of turning a television studio into an unforgettable live-music celebration.
