Dolly Parton’s influence stretched far beyond Nashville, and one of the most remarkable tributes following her passing has now come from Buckingham Palace.
On the morning of August 26, just one day after Dolly’s de@th at 80, the Band of the Coldstream Guards performed an instrumental rendition of her famous hit “9 to 5” during the Changing of the Guard ceremony outside Buckingham Palace.
The unexpected choice immediately caught the attention of tourists gathered outside the palace.
Instead of hearing only the traditional military selections associated with the ceremony, visitors heard one of Dolly’s most recognizable songs echo across the Buckingham Palace forecourt as guards in ceremonial uniforms carried out the historic changing ceremony.
The Royal Family then shared footage of the performance through its official social-media account, turning the musical moment into an unmistakable tribute to the country legend.
The accompanying message remembered Dolly for bringing joy, comfort and inspiration to people around the world, while also recognizing the millions of children who received free books through her Imagination Library.
The message ended with a touching reference to another of Dolly’s most famous songs: “We will always ❤️ you.”
That simple line connected the tribute back to “I Will Always Love You,” the song Dolly wrote decades ago that eventually became one of the most famous compositions in popular music.
The palace performance also carried a deeper historical connection.
Dolly’s relationship with Britain’s Royal Family stretched back nearly half a century. In 1977, she performed during the Royal Variety Performance held as part of celebrations surrounding Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee.
Dolly later remembered meeting Queen Elizabeth as one of the great thrills of her life.
She admitted that she had worried about royal protocol before the meeting, including whether she would curtsy correctly, but remembered the Queen as warm and understanding when they finally met.
Her connections to the Royal Family continued decades later.
In 2023, Dolly revealed that she had been invited to tea by Catherine, Princess of Wales, while visiting London. Her schedule prevented the meeting, and Dolly characteristically turned the story into a joke, suggesting that Catherine probably wasn’t going to promote her latest album anyway.
Queen Camilla also shared one of Dolly’s greatest interests: encouraging children to read.
Following Dolly’s passing, The Queen’s Reading Room, Camilla’s literacy organization, separately honored her and praised the enormous impact of the Imagination Library, which has distributed more than 300 million books over three decades.
Interestingly, King Charles and Queen Camilla were not actually at Buckingham Palace when the musical tribute took place.
They were spending their summer break at Balmoral Castle, but the Royal Family’s official account shared and endorsed the performance, making the tribute part of the monarchy’s public remembrance of Dolly.
The gesture was particularly striking because the Changing of the Guard is one of Britain’s most recognizable ceremonial traditions.
Hearing the unmistakable melody of a Tennessee country star’s song woven into that centuries-old setting illustrated just how far Dolly’s influence had traveled.
And Britain was far from the only place remembering her.
Tributes appeared around the world after news of Dolly’s passing, with musicians, political leaders, landmarks and ordinary fans finding different ways to celebrate the woman whose songs crossed generations and genres.
