Lionel Richie remains hospitalized in a St. Louis intensive care unit as doctors continue evaluating the 77-year-old singer for possible heart-related issues following his latest concert. The new development comes after his hospitalization was initially believed to involve possible mild dehydration.
Richie checked himself into a hospital after performing at The Muny in Forest Park on August 29. According to the latest reports, he has remained there while doctors conduct additional testing, although sources familiar with his condition have indicated that he is doing okay.
Concern first grew during the final moments of the St. Louis show. Audience members noticed Richie appearing to struggle toward the end of the concert before he asked his team to bring a chair onto the stage.
Richie then completed his final song, “All Night Long,” while seated. What initially seemed like an unexpected adjustment became more concerning when news emerged that he had gone to the hospital shortly afterward.
Early reports suggested doctors were examining whether mild dehydration had contributed to the situation. Richie had even spoken about dehydration during the concert and showed the audience an electrolyte drink he had been using while touring.
The latest update, however, indicates that doctors are now also performing tests related to his heart. No specific heart condition has been publicly confirmed, and Richie’s representatives have not announced a diagnosis.
Richie had initially hoped to leave the hospital on Tuesday, but his stay was extended while the additional testing continued. Current reports indicate that doctors expect him to be discharged Wednesday, September 2, provided there are no unexpected developments.
The hospitalization has attracted even more attention because it is Richie’s second significant health scare in a little over two months.
During a June concert in St. Paul, Minnesota, Richie suddenly told the audience that he felt dizzy and strange. He cut that performance short before paramedics met him backstage and transported him to a hospital for evaluation.
That incident forced the postponement of upcoming tour dates, although Richie later recovered and returned to performing. In July, he reassured fans that he was doing well and thanked them for the messages and support they had sent him.
For now, Richie has several weeks away from the stage. His next scheduled performance is September 26 in San Francisco, giving him time to recover before his tour with Earth, Wind & Fire is expected to resume. No change to that date has been officially announced.
The latest update is therefore more serious than the original reports about dehydration, but there is also reason for caution before assuming the worst. Richie remains under medical observation while doctors investigate possible cardiac-related issues, and there has been no confirmed diagnosis of a heart problem at this point.
