New details have emerged after a Georgia police officer fatally shot HeeHaw, a beloved one-year-old miniature donkey, while helping search for a missing 12-year-old girl. The incident has sparked strong reactions in the community, with many people calling for greater transparency about what happened that night.
Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsome previously confirmed that body-camera footage of the incident exists and that he had personally viewed it. However, the chief declined to describe what the footage shows, saying the matter remains under investigation by state authorities.
The shooting happened during an overnight search in Polk County. Officers were assisting in the search when they entered the area around the family’s property, where HeeHaw was in a pasture. The missing child was later found safe at a nearby church.
A police report later provided the first detailed account from Officer Trenton Garner. According to his report, officers following a trail encountered HeeHaw, who he said moved toward the search team. Garner reported that an attempt to deter the donkey was unsuccessful before he fired.
The owner, Hannah Israel, has strongly disputed the characterization of HeeHaw as aggressive. She said she bottle-raised him from the time he was born and described him as extremely social and accustomed to being around people.
Israel has explained that HeeHaw would often run toward people and bray when he saw them because he was so comfortable around humans. She believes that behavior may have been misunderstood during the nighttime search.
