New details are emerging in the case of HeeHaw, a one-year-old miniature donkey who was killed by a Georgia police officer during a search for a missing child.
The incident happened in Polk County, Georgia, while officers were searching for a missing 12-year-old girl. The search eventually led officers and K-9 teams into a pasture where HeeHaw was located.
According to a report written by Cedartown Police Officer Trenton Garner, the donkey approached the officers and allegedly charged toward him and another K-9 handler.
The report states that the K-9 team moved away as HeeHaw approached. An attempt was then made to discourage the animal from coming closer, but Garner said the donkey continued toward the group.
Garner subsequently shot HeeHaw, who died from his injuries.
The officer has since been placed on administrative leave while the circumstances surrounding the incident are investigated.
But one question has continued to draw attention: What exactly happened in those final moments?
Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsome previously confirmed that he had seen body-camera footage from the incident. However, he declined to discuss what the video showed while the case was being handled by state investigators.
That confirmation has become particularly important to HeeHaw’s owner, Hannah Israel, who has repeatedly called for the footage to be released.
Israel has described HeeHaw as an extremely social animal who had been bottle-fed and was accustomed to being around people. She said he had participated in petting events involving children and adults and had never known him to be aggressive.
The family’s account differs sharply from the officer’s description of the encounter, leaving the video potentially significant in determining exactly what happened.
Investigators are now examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Drone footage may also be relevant because firefighters assisting with the search were operating a drone in the area at the time.
The missing girl was ultimately found safe farther along the road where officers had been searching.
Meanwhile, calls for greater transparency have continued to grow. Community members have planned a gathering outside the Polk County Courthouse calling for accountability and asking officials to release available body-camera and drone footage.
The case has also generated a strong reaction online, with supporters of HeeHaw’s family demanding answers while officials have urged people not to direct threats or harassment toward anyone involved.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture’s Law Enforcement Division is conducting an outside investigation into the incident. Officials have said the investigation will be handled thoroughly and impartially before any recommendations are made.
No charges have been filed against the officer at this point.
For HeeHaw’s family, however, the investigation is about more than determining what happened during a late-night search. They want to understand why a beloved animal that they say was gentle and highly social ended up being killed during the operation.
With body-camera footage confirmed to exist and additional footage potentially available from the drone used during the search, attention is now focused on what those recordings may reveal.
Until investigators complete their review and the footage is made available, important questions surrounding the encounter remain unanswered.
