Blake Shelton is officially returning to “The Voice” more than three years after leaving the NBC competition he helped turn into a television phenomenon. NBC teased his comeback on September 16 with a video declaring that “Blake is back,” immediately exciting longtime viewers.
There is, however, an important detail behind the announcement. Shelton is not currently returning as a full-time Season 30 Coach. Instead, his comeback is connected to NBC’s special retrospective, “The Voice: 30th Season Celebration,” honoring 15 years and 30 seasons of the show.
The special reunites Shelton with several familiar faces from the program’s early years. Adam Levine and CeeLo Green, who joined Shelton as original Coaches when “The Voice” premiered in 2011, are part of the celebration, along with Gwen Stefani and longtime host Carson Daly.
Footage promoting the special shows Shelton walking back onto the familiar set and warmly embracing Levine. Shelton, Levine, Stefani and Green are also seen sitting together and remembering what the show was like when it was still a new and unpredictable television experiment.
Those early memories appear to be a major part of the celebration. Daly recalls how little they knew when the journey began, while Levine describes the first years as much wilder than the polished production viewers recognize today. Stefani jokingly compares stories about those early seasons to the “Wild, Wild West.”
Shelton’s presence is particularly meaningful because no Coach has been associated with “The Voice” quite as long. He remained with the program for 23 seasons before stepping away in May 2023, having been one of the four original Coaches when the series launched.
His record on the show was equally remarkable. Shelton coached nine winning Artists during his 23-season run, giving him more victories than any other Coach in the history of the American version of “The Voice.”
“The Voice” also changed Shelton’s personal life. He met Gwen Stefani through the show after she joined as a Coach, and their friendship eventually developed into a relationship. The couple married in 2021, making their appearance together during the anniversary celebration another reminder of how important the series became in Shelton’s life.
Not surprisingly, the announcement generated an enthusiastic response online. Some fans immediately began asking for Shelton to return permanently, while others said seeing him alongside Levine and Stefani brought back memories of earlier seasons.
Those hoping Shelton will reclaim his red chair immediately should keep expectations in check. The confirmed Season 30 coaching panel consists of Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, Queen Latifah and Riley Green, with Carson Daly continuing as host.
Season 30 itself will bring back other familiar elements. Six weeks of live competition are planned—the longest live stretch in five years—and viewers will have expanded opportunities to participate, including voting through TikTok. The Blind Auditions are also introducing a new First-In advantage.
For now, Shelton’s comeback is a celebration of his enormous history with the series rather than confirmation of a permanent coaching return. “The Voice: 30th Season Celebration” airs September 17 on NBC, followed by the Season 30 premiere on Monday, September 21 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. For longtime fans who have missed Shelton’s humor and rivalry with Levine, seeing the original country Coach back on the set may be one of the milestone celebration’s biggest moments.
