A surprising change has taken place around Dolly Parton’s estate just weeks after her death. Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, has reportedly been removed from his longtime position overseeing security at the country legend’s properties.
Seaver had served as Parton’s head of security for more than two decades. The role was deeply connected to his family as well, because his father, Larry Seaver, had handled security for Parton before him.
According to reports, Seaver received a termination notice informing him that both he and his security companies were being dismissed from Parton’s properties effective immediately.
Replacement security teams were reportedly brought in at several locations, including Parton’s main Nashville residence, her museum, downtown residence and warehouse. The sudden change apparently came with little public explanation.
Seaver and members of his team have now spoken about the decision, saying they were “dismayed” by what they described as unexpected and unexplained actions following Parton’s death.
They also raised concerns about the handling of Parton’s affairs. Seaver’s side alleged that certain actions could be occurring in “bad faith” and said they remained determined to protect Parton’s family and honor what they understood to be her final wishes. Those allegations have not been independently established.
The termination notice reportedly states that Parton’s properties and professional business interests are held by the DP Dean Trust. Importantly, losing his security position does not remove Seaver’s personal interest in that trust.
The situation carries additional emotional weight because Seaver was not simply an employee. He is the son of Parton’s sister Cassie and was personally selected by his aunt to announce her death to the world.
Parton died on August 25 at age 80 following a brief battle with cancer. Her official announcement described her as dying peacefully in Nashville and confirmed that, at her request, a small private service would be held for immediate family.
In his emotional announcement, Seaver explained that Parton had asked him years earlier to deliver the news when the time eventually came. He described representing the family at that moment as an honor mixed with tremendous sadness.
Attention is now turning toward the future management of Parton’s properties and extensive business interests. However, the available reporting does not establish that Seaver’s dismissal changes his inheritance or personal interest in the trust.
For now, many questions surrounding the security shake-up remain unanswered. Seaver has made clear that he is unhappy with how the change occurred, while the reasons behind the decision have not been publicly detailed—leaving an unexpected dispute surrounding the estate only weeks after Parton’s death.
