Queen Latifah has wasted no time making her presence felt on “The Voice.” During the Season 30 premiere, the first-time Coach became the first person in the show’s history to successfully use the brand-new First-In Button, and she used it to secure 16-year-old Mia Knight.
Knight performed Sienna Spiro’s “You Stole the Show” during her Blind Audition. Despite being one of the youngest Artists in the competition, her range and mature delivery quickly caught the Coaches’ attention.
Latifah was the first to recognize what she was hearing and turned her chair almost immediately. Riley Green followed, and Kelly Clarkson eventually turned as well, giving Knight an impressive three-chair turn. Adam Levine was the only Coach who stayed facing away.
Clarkson was particularly impressed by the teenager’s range. She praised Knight for being able to move from her lower register into her head voice at only 16 and reminded her that she has successfully coached young singers before.
Green also made a strong pitch. Rather than suggesting Knight needed major changes, he told her that whichever Coach she selected would essentially be working alongside her because she already appeared to have such a strong sense of who she was as an Artist.
Latifah, however, had an advantage neither of them could overcome. Because she had turned first, she was eligible to activate the new First-In Button, one of the biggest changes introduced for Season 30.
The rule allows the first Coach who turns during a multi-chair audition to automatically claim that Artist. Each Coach can use the advantage only once during the Blind Auditions, meaning choosing the right moment is extremely important.
Latifah decided Knight was worth it. While Clarkson was still attempting to convince the teenager to join her team, Latifah activated the First-In Button and automatically secured Knight for Team Queen.
The moment made Latifah the first Coach to successfully demonstrate exactly how powerful the new twist can be. In previous seasons, turning first simply gave a Coach another argument to use during the recruiting battle. Season 30 has transformed that quick decision into a potentially game-changing advantage.
Knight and Latifah also discovered an immediate personal connection: both are from New Jersey. That gave the new Coach another reason to believe the young singer belonged on her team.
But Latifah’s confidence has extended well beyond one successful audition. Kelly Clarkson has admitted that the veteran Coaches lost several Artists to Latifah during the prerecorded Blind Auditions, despite this being Latifah’s first season in one of the famous red chairs.
Latifah’s response made her intentions especially clear. She declared, “I’m dominating the blinds,” joking that it was a title she never expected to have. With Knight already secured through a historic First-In move and Clarkson acknowledging just how difficult the rookie Coach has been to compete against, Queen Latifah is quickly proving that being new to “The Voice” does not necessarily mean playing like a newcomer.
