Joe Henley became one of the most talked-about young country singers from “The Voice” Season 30 premiere after performing Travis Tritt’s “Anymore.” The 19-year-old from Grand Bay, Alabama, needed only a few words of the song before Kelly Clarkson and Riley Green turned their chairs.
His deep voice immediately stood out, but Henley’s background makes the audition even more interesting. Despite sounding comfortable on a national television stage, he arrived with far less professional performance experience than viewers might have expected.
1. He had never performed a professional gig before “The Voice.” Henley grew up singing through his grandparents’ truck-stop ministry, but he said he had never really done a gig before appearing on the show. That meant his Blind Audition was essentially his first major performance outside the church environment he knew growing up.
That makes his composure during “Anymore” particularly notable. Instead of looking overwhelmed by the stage, Henley leaned into the traditional country sound that suited his unusually deep voice and quickly got the reaction he wanted from the Coaches.
2. He actually hoped Kelly Clarkson and Riley Green would fight over him. Before taking the stage, Henley admitted that Green was already one of the Artists he admired. But he also wanted Clarkson to turn because he thought it would be fun to see the experienced Coach battle the country newcomer for him.
That wish came true almost immediately. Clarkson and Green both turned early in the performance, and Clarkson quickly realized she might have a difficult time convincing Henley to look anywhere other than Riley’s direction.
Clarkson still fought hard. She reminded Henley that she had previously won “The Voice” with country singers and argued that he could potentially receive more attention on her team instead of competing alongside several country Artists on Green’s roster.
3. His favorite Riley Green song led to an unexpected duet. During the conversation after his audition, Henley revealed that Green was one of his favorite Artists and named “My Way” as a favorite song. Riley responded by leaving his chair, grabbing his guitar and joining the teenager onstage.
The two performed part of “My Way” together, turning what was already a successful Blind Audition into a moment Henley probably never expected. He had walked onto the stage hoping to impress Green; minutes later, he was singing alongside him.
When it came time to make his decision, Henley told Clarkson how much he loved her but ultimately chose Team Riley. That made him Green’s first team member during his debut season as a Coach.
Clarkson’s reaction showed just how highly she regarded the teenager. Even after losing him, she told Green that Henley “could win you The Voice.” Fans quickly joined the conversation, with some comparing his deep country sound to singers such as Randy Travis, Josh Turner, Scotty McCreery and Chris Young.
Henley’s journey is only beginning, so it remains to be seen how far he will go. But for a 19-year-old who entered without a professional gig behind him, earning two quick chair turns, singing with one of his favorite Artists and receiving such strong early reactions made for an impressive introduction to “The Voice.”
