Riley Green wasted no time revealing exactly what he wants from his first season as a Coach on “The Voice.” During the Season 30 premiere, the country star landed 19-year-old Alabama singer Joe Henley—and afterward made it clear that Henley fits perfectly into his bigger strategy for the competition.
Henley, from Grand Bay, Alabama, arrived at the Blind Auditions with very little traditional stage experience. Outside of singing in church, the teenager said he had never really performed a gig before stepping onto one of television’s biggest singing stages.
For his audition, Henley chose Travis Tritt’s “Anymore.” His deep, old-school country voice immediately caught the attention of both Green and Kelly Clarkson, who turned their chairs almost as soon as he started singing.
The situation was exactly what Henley had hoped for. He was already a fan of Green before appearing on the show, but he also wanted Clarkson to turn because he wanted to see the experienced Coach battle the country newcomer for him.
Clarkson certainly gave Green a fight. She reminded Henley that she has won “The Voice” with country Artists before and argued that joining her could allow him to stand apart rather than competing for attention alongside several country singers on Green’s team.
But Green discovered a major advantage when the conversation turned to Henley’s musical influences. Henley revealed that Green was one of his favorites and that “My Way” was his favorite Riley Green song.
Green immediately turned that revelation into one of the premiere’s most memorable moments. He grabbed his guitar, left his red chair and joined Henley onstage for an unexpected performance of “My Way.” The teenager suddenly found himself singing alongside one of the Artists he had admired before entering the competition.
By the time Henley had to choose his Coach, their musical connection was obvious. He told Clarkson that he loved her but ultimately selected Team Riley, making him the first Artist to join Green’s team during his debut season.
Clarkson may have lost the battle, but she gave Green a huge compliment about his new team member. She told him, “He could win you The Voice,” reflecting just how much potential she saw in the 19-year-old after only one performance.
Green then revealed the strategy he plans to follow throughout the Blind Auditions: recruit as many strong country singers as possible. He explained that he wants to get “all of them” because he believes a country Artist has a strong opportunity to win Season 30.
Henley was only the beginning. By the end of premiere night, Green had also secured country duo Ferryn and Brinkley Wright, who earned the season’s first four-chair turn, along with Caroline Alexis. His early roster showed that his country-heavy strategy was already taking shape.
For Green, Henley therefore represents more than just his first team member—he could be the blueprint for how the rookie Coach approaches his entire first season. Green is betting heavily on country music, and with a 19-year-old traditional-country singer already drawing enthusiastic reactions after his first major performance, that strategy has started exactly the way he hoped.
