Harmony McKee took a big risk when she walked onto “The Voice” stage. The 19-year-old from Medina, Tennessee, chose Miranda Lambert’s fiery “Gunpowder & Lead” for her Blind Audition—even though she had never performed a country song before.
That surprising detail wasn’t obvious from her performance. Harmony attacked the song with a powerful, bluesy edge that caught the attention of both Riley Green and Adam Levine, who turned their chairs and immediately found themselves battling for her.
After the performance, Harmony dropped the revelation that changed the entire coaching battle: she doesn’t normally consider herself a country Artist. Her musical background leans much more toward R&B, soul, rock and blues.
Adam could barely contain his excitement when he heard that. Suddenly, Riley’s obvious advantage as the country Coach didn’t seem nearly as strong, and Adam believed Harmony’s versatility made her a natural fit for his team.
Adam told Harmony that his excitement wasn’t because he disliked country music. Instead, he believed her voice could cross genres and argued that she was one of the stronger singers the Coaches had heard during the Blind Auditions.
Riley, however, found an unexpected connection with Harmony. She explained that she had sung some Johnny Cash with her grandfather, and Riley could relate because his own grandfather had also helped shape his appreciation for traditional country music.
Riley then pointed to Chris Stapleton as an example of why Harmony didn’t need to fit neatly into one musical category. Stapleton’s music mixes strong country roots with blues influences, and Riley believed Harmony could bring her own rock-and-blues background into country music in a similar way.
Kelly Clarkson, despite not turning for Harmony, actually helped Riley’s argument. She pointed out that Riley didn’t already have anyone on his team who sounded quite like Harmony, meaning her distinctive style could allow her to stand out rather than blend into his country-heavy roster.
Then came the decision. With Adam and Riley both waiting, Harmony announced that she was choosing Team Riley. It should have immediately triggered a celebration—but instead, something strange happened.
The audience had been loudly supporting Adam during the coaching battle, and when Harmony chose Riley, the room suddenly seemed unusually quiet. Riley looked genuinely confused and didn’t even immediately get out of his chair to celebrate. Kelly had to point out to him that Harmony had just picked him.
Riley then looked toward the audience and jokingly wondered why nobody was cheering for him. When he later returned to the stage and finally received a much louder response, he continued joking about the crowd’s earlier reaction.
Despite the unusual celebration, Riley clearly considered Harmony a major win. He praised the way she made the Miranda Lambert song her own and the confidence with which she commanded the stage. Now Harmony joins Team Riley as something different from the traditional country singers he has been collecting—a 19-year-old performer whose R&B, rock and blues influences could make her one of the most unpredictable Artists on his team
