Morgan Lett stepped onto The Voice stage with a familiar Mary J. Blige classic, but within seconds, the 27-year-old singer had the coaches paying close attention.
The Akron, Ohio, native performed “I’m Goin’ Down” during the September 23 Blind Auditions, delivering a soulful performance filled with power, control and some impressive vocal runs.
It did not take long for one of the coaches to make a move. Roughly 30 seconds into the performance, Queen Latifah turned her chair, signaling that she wanted Lett on her team.
Lett continued building momentum as the song progressed, showing that she was capable of handling both the emotional side of the song and its bigger vocal moments. Her performance eventually convinced Riley Green to turn as well.
That left Lett with two coaches competing for her. Adam Levine and Kelly Clarkson ultimately stayed in their chairs, meaning Lett did not receive the coveted four-chair turn.
Still, the reaction from viewers quickly became part of the conversation. Some fans felt Lett had delivered the kind of performance that could easily have resulted in all four coaches turning around.
Green was particularly impressed by what Lett did vocally. He pointed out that she reached notes beyond what he had expected and described the performance as unreal.
Queen Latifah focused on something slightly different. She praised Lett for making the song her own rather than simply trying to reproduce a familiar version of it.
For Latifah, that ability could become an important advantage as the competition moves forward. She told Lett that her individuality showed she could approach different songs in her own style.
When the time came to make her decision, Lett chose Queen Latifah. She officially joined Team Queen and secured her place in the next stage of the competition.
Lett brings experience beyond the Blind Auditions as well. She studied music at Georgia State University and has toured with the Best of Harlem Gospel Choir before continuing her musical journey in Atlanta.
Now, the attention turns to the Battle Rounds, where Lett will have to prove that her Blind Audition was only the beginning. After making such a strong first impression, viewers will be watching closely to see what she brings next.
