Kayleigh Mathews Earns Four-Chair Turn on ‘The Voice’ With Vince Gill Classic Before Making Surprise Coach Choice

Kayleigh Mathews delivered one of the biggest country moments of The Voice Season 30 when her Blind Audition convinced Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, Riley Green and Queen Latifah to all turn their chairs.

The 31-year-old singer from Tucson, Arizona, stepped onto the stage with Vince Gill’s “When I Call Your Name,” a demanding country classic that immediately showed off her traditional sound.

Adam Levine was the first coach to recognize what was happening and turned his chair early.

Before long, Riley, Kelly and Queen followed, officially giving Kayleigh a four-chair turn and setting off one of the most competitive coach battles of the Blind Auditions.

Queen Latifah appeared particularly moved by what she heard.

She told Kayleigh that the performance had “took me to church,” describing it as a spiritual moment and explaining that the more Kayleigh sang, the more emotionally connected she became to the performance.

Riley Green was equally impressed, especially by Kayleigh’s decision to take on a song associated with one of country music’s most respected vocalists.

Riley explained that the sound took him back to his childhood in Alabama and said Kayleigh had successfully taken on the enormous challenge of singing a Vince Gill song.

Kelly Clarkson then made another striking comparison.

She told Kayleigh that her voice reminded her of several female country singers she loves, specifically bringing up Patty Loveless and LeAnn Rimes while describing the combination she heard in Kayleigh’s tone.

Kelly also had another connection to the song choice working in her favor — she has previously performed with Vince Gill herself.

Adam, meanwhile, made it clear that he wasn’t willing to surrender simply because Kayleigh was a country singer and Riley was sitting only a few chairs away.

He argued that his extensive experience on The Voice could give Kayleigh a strategic advantage and told her that he was prepared to fight harder than ever to get her on his team.

The battle between Adam and Riley even turned comedic when Riley used a large duck blind as part of his attempt to keep Adam from continuing his pitch.

But after all four coaches had made their cases, Kayleigh delivered the biggest surprise of the entire audition.

She chose Queen Latifah.

The decision caught attention because Riley appeared to be the most obvious match for a traditional country singer, while Adam and Kelly had also mounted strong arguments.

Instead, Kayleigh chose the coach who had spoken most strongly about the emotional and spiritual quality of her performance.

Kayleigh’s country background also stretches well beyond her appearance on The Voice.

After moving from Arizona to Nashville in 2018 to pursue music, she landed a job as a tour guide at the Grand Ole Opry, an opportunity she has described as a dream job that helped immerse her in Nashville’s country music community.

She had already been singing for years before that move, including performances at church, bluegrass events and school while growing up.

Kayleigh later began performing professionally and releasing her own music, gradually building a career while playing dozens of shows and spending significant time on the road.

Now, years after guiding visitors through one of country music’s most famous venues, she has found herself standing on another nationally televised stage with four superstar coaches trying to convince her to choose them.

And after a four-chair turn, comparisons to Patty Loveless and LeAnn Rimes, and one unexpected decision to join Team Queen, Kayleigh Mathews may have become one of Season 30’s most intriguing country contestants just as the Blind Auditions reach their conclusion.
