Evan James walked onto The Voice stage sounding like an obvious fit for Riley Green’s team.
By the time he walked off, however, the 22-year-old Michigan singer had made one of the more surprising coaching decisions of the final Blind Auditions.
Evan performed Morgan Wallen’s “Wasted on You,” putting his own soulful spin on the country hit while gradually building toward a powerful finish.
For much of the performance, the coaches listened closely without pressing their buttons.
Then, near the end, everything changed.
Kelly Clarkson, Riley Green and Adam Levine all turned, giving Evan a three-chair turn and suddenly forcing him to choose between three very different coaches. Queen Latifah did not turn because her team was already full.
Kelly immediately praised Evan for taking such a recognizable Morgan Wallen song and making it sound like his own.
She said she heard shades of Gary LeVox from Rascal Flatts in his voice, along with an R&B influence that gave his version a distinctive quality.
Riley also seemed like an obvious possibility.
As Season 30’s country coach, he had already attracted several artists from that genre, and he praised Evan for growing stronger as the audition continued.
Riley told him that by the end of the song, he felt Evan had truly taken ownership of the performance.
But Adam recognized something that may have ultimately changed the decision.
He pointed out that Riley already had several country singers on his team.
Adam, meanwhile, didn’t.
That meant Evan wouldn’t simply become another country artist competing for attention on Team Riley.
On Team Adam, he could potentially occupy a completely different lane.
“You would definitely stand out,” Adam told him.
The argument clearly connected with Evan.
When it came time to choose, he admitted he was about to make a decision that felt risky.
“I think I’m going to take a leap of faith,” he said before announcing that he was choosing Adam Levine.
The choice caught the coaches by surprise.
Country singers had repeatedly gravitated toward Riley during the Blind Auditions, making Evan’s decision to join Adam especially unexpected.
For Adam, however, it was exactly what he had hoped for.
The veteran coach celebrated finally landing a strong country singer and thanked Evan for taking a chance on him.
Evan’s story also stands out away from the stage.
He grew up on his family’s Christmas tree farm in Highland, Michigan, a property his family has operated for generations.
He has spent recent years performing locally while also attending Michigan State University, where he studies public relations.
Evan has also said he has been a longtime fan of The Voice, watching the competition years before ever imagining himself standing on the same stage.
And there was another fitting connection behind his song choice.
Morgan Wallen himself once competed on The Voice, giving Evan’s performance of “Wasted on You” another layer of meaning as he tried to launch his own career on the same show.
But the biggest moment came after the singing stopped.
Riley Green may have seemed like the natural choice for a country singer.
Instead, Evan James listened to Adam Levine’s argument, took what he called a “leap of faith,” and chose the coach who believed being different on his team could become Evan’s biggest advantage.
Now Adam finally has the country singer he wanted — and Evan may have found exactly the place where he can stand out most.
