SHOCKING PICK EXPLAINED — Evan James Chose Adam Levine Over Riley Green, and a Morgan Wallen Connection Makes the Decision Even More Interesting

Adam Levine looked genuinely surprised when Michigan country singer Evan James chose him as his coach on The Voice.

And at first glance, the decision seemed almost impossible to predict.

Evan, 22, had just performed Morgan Wallen’s “Wasted on You,” putting a soulful twist on the country hit and earning a dramatic three-chair turn from Kelly Clarkson, Riley Green and Adam.

With a country artist like Riley sitting only a few feet away, many viewers expected Evan’s choice to be obvious.

Instead, Evan stunned the room.

“I think I’m going to take a leap of faith here,” he said before choosing Team Adam.

Adam’s pitch had clearly landed.

He told Evan that Riley already had a team packed with country artists, while Evan could occupy a much more distinctive lane on Team Adam.

Rather than fighting for attention alongside several singers with similar styles, Evan could become one of Adam’s standout country voices.

That strategic argument appears to have played a major role in his final decision.

But there is another connection that makes the choice even more interesting.

The artist whose song Evan performed has his own history with Adam Levine.

Morgan Wallen competed on The Voice Season 6 in 2014.

He originally joined Team Usher before later being stolen by Adam Levine, meaning Wallen ultimately spent part of his own Voice journey on Team Adam.

More than a decade later, Evan walked onto the same stage, performed one of Wallen’s biggest songs and then made the same coaching connection.

That coincidence matters because Evan has openly acknowledged that Wallen’s career is one he looks up to.

The Michigan singer has said he hopes his own experience after The Voice can follow a similar path — using the show as a beginning rather than the peak of his career.

Wallen did not win The Voice.

He didn’t even reach the finale.

But after leaving the competition, he eventually built one of the biggest careers in modern country music.

For a young singer like Evan, that story offers a powerful example of what can happen after the television cameras stop rolling.

That doesn’t mean Evan selected Adam specifically because Wallen once worked with him.

Evan has not publicly made that claim.

His own explanation on the show was much more about strategy — taking a “leap of faith” and choosing the team where Adam believed he could stand out most clearly.

Still, the Wallen connection adds another layer to an already surprising decision.

Riley Green appeared to be the safest choice.

He understood Evan’s genre, praised the soul in his voice and recognized how much stronger the performance became once Evan settled into the song.

Kelly Clarkson also pushed hard, praising the R&B flavor Evan added to such a familiar country hit.

Adam offered something different.

He wasn’t asking Evan to stay inside the most obvious lane.

He was asking him to become something unusual on his team.

And that may have been exactly what Evan wanted.

The 22-year-old has already spent years preparing for a larger music career, performing around Michigan while studying public relations at Michigan State University and building an audience through live performances and social media.

He has also described himself as an aspiring Nashville recording artist, suggesting that his plans extend far beyond simply surviving one television competition.

So perhaps Evan’s surprising decision makes more sense than it first appeared.

Choosing Riley would have been the natural country move.

Choosing Adam was the gamble.

And for a singer who says he dreams of building a career after The Voice like Morgan Wallen did, taking the less obvious path may have felt exactly right.

Evan James called it a leap of faith.

Now he has to prove it was the right one.
