Riley Green wanted Caroline Alexis and Everett Bounds to make their The Voice Battle believable.
There was just one complication:
They weren’t exactly pretending.
The two Team Riley country singers revealed before their Battle that they had developed a real-life connection after meeting backstage during the Blind Auditions.
Everett had noticed Caroline almost immediately, later surprising her with flowers and a handwritten note asking her to dinner.
Caroline accepted, and the two went on several dates before learning that Riley had paired them against each other.
Then came Riley’s song choice.
He assigned them Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn’s classic duet “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man.”
With country star Carly Pearce helping mentor Team Riley, the rehearsals quickly became about more than simply hitting the correct notes.
Riley wanted storytelling.
He explained that the decision could come down to whichever singer most fully committed to the characters and convinced the audience that the relationship inside the song was real.
Then he offered some very straightforward advice:
Lean into the flirtation.
For Everett, that instruction wasn’t exactly difficult.
He had already made it clear that he was interested in Caroline away from the stage.
Caroline, meanwhile, said Everett had qualities she respected and described him as supportive and encouraging.
Suddenly Riley had unintentionally paired two contestants who were already dating for a romantic country duet.
On paper, it sounded perfect.
And once they reached the Battle stage, their chemistry was impossible to ignore.
Kelly Clarkson said the performance was fun and loved its classic-country throwback feeling.
She praised Caroline’s sweet storytelling tone and sensual characterization while also recognizing Everett for expanding his range during the song.
Kelly ultimately considered the matchup extremely even.
Adam Levine also praised both singers.
Country music wasn’t his natural musical lane, but if Riley forced him to choose, Adam said he would lean toward Everett.
Riley saw strengths on both sides.
He loved the sass and attitude Caroline brought to the song.
But Everett delivered the playful energy and natural performance style Riley had been hoping to see.
That eventually tipped the decision.
Riley chose Everett Bounds as the Battle winner.
Caroline Alexis was eliminated.
But the performance produced an interesting disagreement outside the coaches’ chairs.
While the coaches largely praised the pair’s chemistry, some reactions were much less enthusiastic.
The criticism wasn’t necessarily that Caroline and Everett lacked a genuine connection.
After all, they had already been going on dates.
Instead, the complaint was that the performance sometimes seemed to push that chemistry too hard.
One widely read Battle recap described the flirtation onstage as feeling “forced and hokey” and called the overall performance underwhelming despite both singers staying vocally solid.
That distinction is important.
There is no evidence Riley somehow damaged the Battle by telling them to interact romantically.
The song itself is built around playful chemistry between two singers, so asking Caroline and Everett to sell that relationship was a logical coaching choice.
But it also shows the risk of emphasizing a performance concept too strongly.
When viewers already know two contestants are romantically interested in each other, repeatedly highlighting the flirting can make the staging feel more like part of the television storyline than a spontaneous musical moment.
That may be why some reactions focused more on the romance than either singer’s voice.
Riley, however, appears comfortable with his decision.
He explained afterward that Everett is especially natural with fun, upbeat, traditional country music.
Riley believes that quality fills an important space on Team Riley as the competition moves toward Cut Week.
The Battle also created an unusual emotional situation for Caroline and Everett.
They had only recently started getting to know each other.
Now one was advancing while the other was being sent home.
Caroline acknowledged before the result that it was an unusual position and joked about Everett telling her she had better continue answering his phone calls afterward.
Their current relationship status hasn’t been publicly confirmed.
But they appear to remain on good terms online following the elimination.
So was encouraging the flirting Riley Green’s first Battle mistake?
That depends on what viewers wanted from the performance.
The coaches largely believed Caroline and Everett successfully sold the song.
Some viewers and critics felt the romantic staging became too obvious and distracted from the vocals.
Riley ultimately cared about something else.
He wanted two singers who could make an old-school country duet feel believable.
And after watching them perform, he decided Everett was the one who could carry that energy deeper into the competition.
