Reba McEntire delivered one of the most emotional moments of the CMA’s Dolly Parton tribute special, honoring her longtime friend with a powerful performance of “He’s Alive.” But the meaning behind her song choice made the tribute even more personal.
The performance took place during CMA Presents I Will Always Love You: A Celebration of Dolly Parton, held in Nashville on October 21. The special brought together country music stars to celebrate Dolly’s extraordinary life and musical legacy.
Before singing, Reba reflected on the friendship she had shared with Dolly for nearly five decades. Her emotional remarks highlighted not only Dolly’s musical achievements but also her generosity, kindness, and faith.

Reba recalled September 1977, when she was preparing for her Grand Ole Opry debut. She learned that one of her scheduled songs would be removed because Dolly had unexpectedly arrived.
Rather than feeling disappointed, Reba was thrilled by the possibility of meeting her idol. Although they did not meet that evening, the encounter became a treasured memory.
Their paths eventually crossed again, and the two developed a lasting friendship. Over the years, they supported each other’s careers and shared memorable moments both onstage and away from the spotlight.
For the tribute, Reba chose “He’s Alive,” a gospel song written by Don Francisco that Dolly recorded for her 1989 album White Limozeen. The selection carried special significance because of the faith both women shared.
The song tells the biblical story of Jesus Christ’s resurrection, emphasizing hope and the promise of life beyond death. Its spiritual message made it a particularly meaningful choice for an evening dedicated to remembering Dolly.
Dolly herself had famously performed “He’s Alive” at the 1989 CMA Awards, making Reba’s rendition a musical connection to one of her friend’s memorable performances.
Dressed in an elegant white gown with gold detailing, Reba delivered a moving vocal performance. Her powerful voice brought the song’s message of faith and hope to the forefront.
As the performance continued, students from Belmont University’s Dolly U program joined Reba onstage. Their voices added another emotional layer, and the audience responded with a standing ovation.

The tribute also reflected Dolly’s influence beyond music. Reba remembered her friend’s generosity and the way she treated everyone with warmth, regardless of their position or fame.
Reba’s performance of “He’s Alive” was more than a musical tribute. By choosing a song closely connected to Dolly’s faith and career, she honored both the legendary entertainer and the dear friend whose kindness had touched her life for nearly 50 years.
