Joe Henley Reveals How The Voice Changed His Future Plans and the Country Legends Who Inspired Him

At just 19 years old, Joe Henley is discovering a future he never expected. The Alabama singer, who joined Team Riley Green on The Voice Season 30, has revealed how the competition changed his career plans and opened his eyes to a possible future in country music.

Before appearing on the show, Henley had little experience performing for large audiences. Most of his singing took place at home, outdoors, or during small gatherings connected to his family’s ministry.

His original ambition was basketball. Henley had considered playing at the college level and even exploring opportunities overseas, with professional singing far from his immediate plans.

Everything began changing when he auditioned for The Voice. Performing Travis Tritt’s “Anymore,” the teenager impressed both Kelly Clarkson and Riley Green, who turned their chairs for his powerful country voice.

Henley ultimately chose Green as his coach, creating a memorable moment when the country star joined him onstage for an impromptu performance of “My Way.”

The experience also brought unexpected attention. Henley admitted that suddenly reaching a national audience was difficult to prepare for, especially after spending most of his life singing in relatively private settings.

One of the biggest influences on his changing plans came from Green himself. When Henley asked what his coach would do if he were starting a music career at 19, Green encouraged him to pursue the opportunity.

That advice became even more meaningful during the Battles, when Henley faced fellow Team Riley contestant Kenna Elpers. Together, they performed Green and Ella Langley’s “Don’t Mind If I Do.”

Both singers received praise, but Green ultimately selected Henley to advance. The decision was emotional for the young performer, who respected Kenna’s experience and talent.

Henley also revealed the country musicians who helped shape his distinctive sound. His influences include Keith Whitley, Vince Gill, Don Williams, Travis Tritt, and Riley Green.

His love for traditional country music is reflected in his deep vocal tone and preference for emotional storytelling. He also practices songs by Randy Travis to strengthen his lower register.

With new musical opportunities appearing, Henley is considering stepping away from basketball for a year to explore singing. However, he remains realistic about the future and understands that a professional music career is not guaranteed.

For Joe Henley, The Voice has already become more than a singing competition. What began as an unexpected opportunity has introduced him to a possible new career, valuable mentorship, and a musical future he had never seriously imagined.
