Joe Henley Opens Up About His Special Bond With Riley Green as Kenna Elpers Helps Him Discover New Confidence on The Voice

The Voice Season 30 contestant Joe Henley has opened up about the meaningful relationships that have shaped his journey on the NBC singing competition. The 19-year-old Alabama country singer revealed how his connection with coach Riley Green has helped him feel more comfortable in the spotlight, while fellow contestant Kenna Elpers played an unexpected role in developing his musical confidence. For Henley, the experience has become much more than competing for a record deal or national recognition.

Henley’s connection with Green began during the Blind Auditions when he performed Travis Tritt’s “Anymore.” Both Green and Kelly Clarkson turned their chairs, impressed by his naturally deep country vocals. However, Henley had already developed a strong admiration for Green’s music, making the decision especially meaningful. The moment became even more memorable when Green stepped onto the stage with his guitar and performed “My Way” alongside the young singer.

According to Henley, their connection developed naturally because they shared several important similarities. Both grew up in Alabama, enjoyed sports, and came from backgrounds that shaped their personalities in similar ways. Henley explained that these common interests made conversations with Green feel comfortable rather than intimidating, helping him adjust to working with an established country star.

Henley described the similarities between himself and his coach as an important advantage throughout the competition. He recalled Green suggesting that speaking with him felt like talking to someone from back home. Their shared upbringing and relaxed personalities helped establish a comfortable working relationship, allowing Henley to approach rehearsals with less pressure and greater confidence in his abilities.

The young singer also admitted that having Green as his coach made the entire experience more enjoyable. Rather than feeling overwhelmed by the pressure of performing on national television, he found it easier to relax and concentrate on his music. Henley explained that their natural understanding helped him feel comfortable enough to breathe, learn, and embrace the opportunity without allowing nervousness to dominate every moment.

However, Green was not the only person who made a lasting impression on Henley’s journey. During the Battle Rounds, he was paired with fellow Team Riley contestant Kenna Elpers for a performance of “Don’t Mind If I Do,” the country duet recorded by Green and Ella Langley. Although the two singers were competing against each other for advancement, their preparation became an unexpectedly positive experience for Henley.

Henley praised Elpers for both her musical talent and her supportive personality, describing her as an outstanding singer and person. During rehearsals, Elpers helped him work through the song’s harmonies and offered suggestions to strengthen their performance. Her assistance was especially valuable because Henley entered the competition with limited professional performance experience and was still learning how to navigate different musical arrangements.

Despite eventually winning their Battle, Henley admitted that he believed Elpers also deserved to advance. He recalled watching her perform and feeling that she had delivered one of her strongest vocal moments. His admiration remained clear even after Green selected him as the winner. Henley also joked that Elpers probably learned patience from working with him, acknowledging the effort she invested in helping him improve.

Beyond the relationships he developed, Henley revealed that his experience on The Voice has dramatically changed how he views his musical future. Although he had loved singing for years, the idea of pursuing music professionally once seemed intimidating. He worried about putting himself in front of an audience and questioned whether people would appreciate his performances. However, advancing through multiple rounds has gradually helped him overcome those doubts.

Now preparing for Cut Week on November 2, Henley believes his dream of becoming a professional country musician may finally be achievable. His recent rendition of Keith Whitley’s “Don’t Close Your Eyes” has already impressed all four coaches and attracted enthusiastic reactions from viewers. While his future in the competition remains uncertain, Henley has gained something valuable beyond the results: a supportive relationship with Riley Green, important lessons from Kenna Elpers, and a growing belief that he has a genuine opportunity to build a career doing what he loves.
