Torvill and Dean Announce Shock Exit from Dancing on Ice: “We Wanted to End It at the Top”

After two glittering decades of dazzling audiences on Dancing on Ice, legendary Olympic champions Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean have confirmed that the show will come to an end — and so too will their reign as its beloved stars. The pair, whose names are synonymous with ice-dancing brilliance, revealed the news with a simple but cryptic explanation: “We wanted to finish at the top.”

The announcement immediately ignited speculation among fans. Was it ITV pulling the plug amid dwindling ratings? Or had Torvill and Dean themselves decided it was time for one last bow? Sitting down to address the rumors, the skating icons were quick to clear the air. Far from a falling out with producers, they insisted the decision was theirs — made not with sadness, but with a sense of perfect timing.

“By the end of the last series we’d started to think about when we should call it a day,” Dean admitted. “Next year was always going to be a big one for us — it’s the 30th anniversary of our Olympic win and of our first performance of Bolero. It felt like things had come full circle.”

Torvill added warmly, “We’ve had such a great time doing Dancing on Ice, but we wanted to finish while the magic was still there. Chris and I will always be connected in some way — we might even still be skating in our 80s! Although the costumes may have to change a bit by then.”

The news marks the end of an era for ITV’s hit series, which first launched in 2006 and has seen everyone from soap stars to Olympians take to the rink under Torvill and Dean’s guidance. Their final season — the show’s ninth — is being planned as a spectacular send-off, with special celebrity guests, new twists, and the possibility of a show-stopping reprise of their iconic Bolero.

The duo teased their dream celebrity wish list for the farewell, which includes none other than David Beckham. “He’s retired, so the timing is perfect,” Jayne laughed. “Maybe he’d want to learn a new skill.” Dean chimed in: “Or be a judge — but only if he does it with his top off!”

Despite the end of Dancing on Ice, Torvill and Dean are hardly ready to retreat from the spotlight. Both hinted at new projects already in the works, including a live performance venture and a possible charity show. As Dean noted, “We’ve skated an estimated 250,000 miles together — ten times around the world. It’s been an incredible journey, and we’re not quite done yet.”

For fans, their exit may be bittersweet. But with one last season and a final live tour planned, the legendary pair promise a farewell worthy of their Olympic legacy. And if history is any guide, when Torvill and Dean take their last bow, it will be every bit as unforgettable as their first.
