As American Idol Season 23 enters its final stretch, the Top 5 gave everything they had during the May 12 Disney Night live broadcast — hoping to earn enough viewer votes to make it to the coveted Top 3 and return home for celebratory visits.
Slater Nalley kicked off the evening with a bold change — performing “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” without his signature guitar, donning a tux for a classic crooner vibe. Lin-Manuel Miranda praised the song choice, and the judges were thrilled by Nalley’s comfort on stage. Carrie Underwood called it a “fun way to start,” and Luke Bryan, impressed by the transformation, said it was one of his favorite takes on the song. Lionel Richie reminded Nalley how far he’s come, especially after his emotional comment to Ryan Seacrest about wanting redemption after a previous misstep.
John Foster brought Southern charm to “The Bare Necessities,” slowing it down before ramping up the energy midway through. His playful delivery was well-received by the judges and audience alike. Bryan complimented his ability to settle into a look and sound that connects, Richie celebrated his likability, and Underwood called the performance a joyride, thrilled to hear a childhood favorite with a fresh twist.
Thunderstorm Artis delivered a standout moment with his delicate version of “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes,” a lullaby he often sings to his toddler. With guidance from Miranda, Artis stepped away from the mic stand to bring subtle movement and intimacy to the stage. Richie said he “knocked it out of the park,” and Underwood called him “all heart.” Bryan noted how hard it is to even critique someone who gives that much sincerity.
The show continues with performances from Jamal Roberts and Breanna Nix, as the remaining five fight for a spot in next week’s live finale, airing Sunday, May 18.
