Director Dean Fleischer Camp emphasized the importance of cultural integrity: “When you’re telling a story about Hawaii with this rich, cultural history, it was really important to all of us that we had voices with a close connection to the culture.” That commitment shines through in the new lineup of performers, who bring personal ties to the islands as well as worldwide star power.
Among the film’s standout voices is American Idol winner Iam Tongi, who grew up in Hawaii and brings heartfelt authenticity to his rendition of “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride.” Smiling during the recording session, Tongi shared, “This movie has such a strong message about ‘ohana, family. It was honestly a dream come true. I can only hope my version lives on in the hearts of a new generation of kids.”

Hometown superstar Bruno Mars also plays a key role in bridging tradition and pop culture. Born in Honolulu, Mars pays homage to the film’s original Elvis connection with a brand-new take on “Burning Love.” In a family twist, his nephews, Zyah Rhythm and Nyjah Music, recorded the track’s vocals, creating a true ‘ohana moment behind the scenes. “Our family actually got together to make this song,” Zyah shared. “It was about more than music — it was about honoring our roots.”
The production team also honored the original Lilo & Stitch soundtrack by inviting back legendary Hawaiian musician Mark Kealii Hoomalu, whose chants set the tone for the 2002 film. His voice once again brings gravitas to the new movie, alongside the iconic Kamehameha Schools Children’s Chorus. For choir director Lynell Bright, the return was emotional: “The first time we did it, it felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Now, we get to be a part of it again. It’s a full circle moment.”
That full-circle theme goes even deeper for the Bright family. Lynell’s son, Chris Kekaniokalani Bright, is now one of the screenwriters for the live-action adaptation, carrying forward the cultural storytelling that defined his childhood. For many fans, this connection adds another layer of authenticity and heart to the film.
Between the powerhouse vocals of Bruno Mars, the soul-stirring presence of Iam Tongi, and the return of voices that made the original so special, Disney’s new Lilo & Stitch promises to be more than a remake. It’s shaping up to be a celebration of Hawaiian heritage, music, and family — all wrapped in a story that has resonated with audiences for over two decades.
For Disney, it’s not just about bringing a beloved animated tale to life — it’s about honoring its roots while creating a soundtrack that future generations will treasure. Judging by early reactions, fans are ready to embrace this new musical chapter with open arms.
