Phil Robertson, the beloved patriarch of the Robertson family, star of Duck Dynasty, and passionate Christian evangelist, has died just months after being diagnosed with a blood disorder and Alzheimer’s disease. He was 78.
The Robertson family announced his passing in a heartfelt statement on social media, writing:
“We celebrate today that our father, husband, and grandfather, Phil Robertson, is now with the Lord. He reminded us often of the words of Paul, ‘you do not grieve like those who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.’”
“Thank you for the love and prayers of so many whose lives have been impacted by his life saved by grace, his bold faith, and by his desire to tell everyone who would listen the Good News of Jesus. We are grateful for his life on earth and will continue the legacy of love for God and love for others until we see him again.”
While a private family service will be held soon, the Robertsons plan to host a public memorial for fans and supporters to honor Phil’s legacy.
A Legacy of Faith and Family
Known to millions as the straight-talking patriarch behind the Duck Dynasty phenomenon, Phil’s life stretched far beyond television. A former star quarterback and founder of Duck Commander, Phil’s greatest pride was his transformation from a man lost in darkness to one redeemed by the grace of Christ.
In recent weeks, his sons Jase and Al had been candid about Phil’s declining health. On their Unashamed podcast, Jase reflected on his father’s final season, saying it felt like Phil was “getting ready for the journey to the other side.”
In one particularly memorable 2022 podcast episode, Phil offered comfort to his family and fans:
“When I die, don’t cry. Sing. Dance. But don’t cry when I die. When I die you say, ‘He made it.’”
He added in a YouTube message later that year:
“You’re gonna pick up a newspaper or that little black box and it’s gonna say, ‘Phil Robertson has died.’ Just remember this — I didn’t pass away. I’ll just go from the tent to immortality… resurrected, glorified, and living with Him forever.”
Loved and Remembered
Granddaughter Sadie Robertson Huff shared intimate photos and memories of her grandfather, revealing some of his final words:
“As I was sitting with Papaw Phil today, I thought about this verse… he has already experienced this on earth—going from dead to alive by the power of Christ! It was his testimony that changed his life, our family’s life, and thousands of others. Now he is experiencing it in the fullness. Fully alive in Christ.”
“One of the last things he said to me was, ‘Full strength ahead!’ Amen!”
Another granddaughter, Bella Mayo, echoed those sentiments:
“My Papaw Phil is now where he always longed to be — with God, his Father. I miss him already and cannot wait to see him again one day.”
In Memoriam
Phil Robertson leaves behind a powerful legacy of faith, family, and transformation — a legacy that will live on through his children, grandchildren, and the countless lives he touched through his testimony.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Robertson family during this difficult time.
