He Pushed Me From Day One”: John Foster Honors Uncle Gaylen as His Musical Inspiration Ahead of American Idol Finale

John Foster

As American Idol Season 23 draws to a dramatic close, Top 3 finalist John Foster is reflecting on the roots of his musical journey — and it all started with his uncle, Gaylen Martin.

In an interview with American Songwriter published on May 15, 2025, Foster opened up about the man who first inspired him to pick up a guitar. “I wouldn’t be a musician if it weren’t for my Uncle Gaylen,” Foster said. “He pushed me from day one when I was 15 years old. He showed me my first four chords on the guitar — the chords to ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ — and he’s supported me ever since.”

A Family Legacy of Music

Martin, a local musician in Louisiana, saw Foster’s natural vocal talent early on and helped him shape it. What started as a few casual lessons turned into a deep mentorship that helped Foster find his musical voice. “It just progressed on,” Martin recalled. “He took an interest in wanting to learn to play guitar. I gave him a few tips and tricks and taught him a few chords.”

And from there, the spark grew into a fire.

“Everything I tell him, he’s like a sponge,” Martin said. “He absorbs it. And you know, the rest is history.”

A Teachable Spirit That’s Taken Him Far

Martin also emphasized Foster’s discipline and drive — traits that have carried him from small-town jam sessions to the American Idol stage. “He’s been very teachable since he was young,” Martin said. “Whatever I taught him, he’d get it the next day. Watching him now on national television — it’s nothing short of amazing.”

As American Idol fans nationwide gear up for the May 18 finale, Foster’s story has resonated with many. From humble beginnings in Addis, Louisiana, to heartfelt tributes on a global platform, Foster’s journey is a testament to what guidance, grit, and gratitude can achieve.

The Road Ahead

With his uncle cheering him on and a growing fanbase behind him, John Foster stands on the edge of what could be a life-changing night. Whether or not he takes the Idol crown, one thing is clear: the values and lessons passed down by his uncle have already shaped a promising young artist whose story is just beginning.
