With just days to go until the American Idol Season 23 finale, the tension is real — and so are the predictions. After a season packed with goosebump-worthy performances and emotional highs, the final three contestants have been revealed: Jamal Roberts, John Foster, and Breanna Nix.
But while fans are still placing their bets, judge Luke Bryan has already made up his mind — and he’s not shy about it.

“Jamal’s Had the Lead All Year”
In a revealing post-show interview after the May 12 live episode, Bryan shared his unfiltered thoughts on the Top 3 — and he didn’t hold back on praise for Jamal Roberts.
“My gut has told me Jamal’s had the lead all year,” said the country star. “He’s been consistent, commanding… he’s had the reins.”
Bryan, however, knows better than to count anyone out. He gave props to Breanna Nix and John Foster, both of whom have surged in recent weeks.
“Breanna just keeps coming back stronger — she surprises us every week,” Bryan said. “And John? That guy’s picking up serious steam. Momentum like his can flip the game.”
As the finalists gear up for the biggest performance of their lives, Bryan pointed out that talent alone won’t win the title — mental stamina is just as crucial.
“At this stage, one off day can cost you everything,” he warned. “It’s a test of endurance now. This is the music business. You’ve got to show up and stay sharp.”
Fellow judge Lionel Richie chimed in with his own take — and for him, the winner will be the one who connects.
“It’s not always about hitting every note,” Richie explained. “It’s about heart. Who do fans feel something for? That’s who wins.”
Carrie Underwood Weighs In: “It’s Star Boot Camp”
Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood — who knows exactly what it takes to win — offered a dose of reality from the other side of the crown.
“They’ve had a shorter season than we did back in my day,” she noted. “Everything’s happening at lightning speed. They’re probably just trying to catch their breath.”
She compared Idol’s finale week to a real-world crash course in fame:
“It’s star boot camp. You’re doing hometown visits, rehearsals, press… and it only gets crazier after you win.”
