The family of HeeHaw, a beloved miniature donkey who was fatally shot by a Georgia police officer during a search for a missing child, has taken legal action against local authorities. Attorneys for the family have filed a federal lawsuit seeking $1 million in damages.

According to the family’s account, HeeHaw was a friendly and highly social animal who was accustomed to being around people. His owner, Hannah Israel, has disputed the suggestion that the donkey posed the kind of danger described by the officer involved.
The officer, Trenton Garner of the Cedartown Police Department, has provided a different account. According to his report, HeeHaw moved toward officers and a K-9 team during the search, and Garner believed the animal presented a threat before he fired.
One major question is exactly what happened during those final moments. The competing descriptions from the officer and HeeHaw’s owner have created uncertainty over whether the donkey was behaving aggressively or simply approaching people in his pasture.
