Search Teams Reveal How Weston Higginbotham Was Found After Week-Long Search in Japan

The search for Auburn University student James ‘Weston’ Higginbotham came to a heartbreaking conclusion after search-and-rescue teams located his body in a remote mountainous area outside Kyoto, Japan. His disappearance had drawn international attention and prompted a large-scale effort involving authorities, volunteers, and supporters from around the world.

The 20-year-old student vanished on May 29 while visiting Japan with his family. After becoming separated from relatives during the trip, he was later seen on surveillance footage near Yamashina Station, east of Kyoto, before disappearing from public view.

In the days that followed, Japanese authorities launched an extensive search operation. Police officers, K9 units, helicopters, volunteers, and local rescue teams worked together to cover a vast area in hopes of finding him.

The search proved especially difficult because investigators believed Weston had entered a rugged forested region near Yamashina. The area is known for steep slopes, dense vegetation, and challenging terrain that can be difficult to navigate even for experienced hikers.

Compounding those challenges was severe weather. Heavy rainfall and storm conditions affected search efforts during the week, limiting visibility and making access to certain areas even more dangerous.

According to reports, search teams eventually focused on mountainous woodland outside Kyoto where volunteers continued looking after official efforts had become increasingly difficult. A volunteer search-and-rescue group ultimately made the discovery.

The news was confirmed by Weston’s family, who shared a statement expressing profound grief while thanking the many people who participated in the search and offered support throughout the ordeal.

As details emerged, public discussion intensified regarding what may have happened in the hours before Weston disappeared. However, authorities have not publicly announced a cause of death, and many questions remain unanswered.

Friends, classmates, and supporters have continued sharing tributes, remembering Weston as a talented student, an outdoors enthusiast, and someone deeply passionate about environmental issues and sustainable design.

While investigators continue their work, the focus for many has shifted from the mystery of the disappearance to honoring Weston’s memory. The week-long search that united volunteers across two countries has ended, but the impact of his loss continues to be felt by family, friends, and all those who followed the story with hope for a different outcome.
