Photos From Karmelo Anthony’s Life Before Prison Draw New Attention After 35-Year Sentence

Photos from Karmelo Anthony’s life before prison are getting new attention online after his murder conviction and 35-year sentence in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf. Long before the case became national news, social media posts shared by his family showed a different image of Anthony’s life, filled with family events, school milestones, sports achievements, and moments that appeared far removed from the courtroom.

Anthony, now 19, was 17 at the time of the April 2, 2025 confrontation at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas. The case centered on what happened near a Memorial High School team tent, where witnesses said Anthony had been asked to leave before tensions escalated.

During the trial, prosecutors argued that Anthony provoked the confrontation and used deadly force when he had other options. Witnesses testified that Anthony warned Austin to “touch me and see what happens” before reaching into his bag, and after Austin pushed him, Anthony pulled out a knife and stabbed him once in the chest.

Anthony’s defense argued that he acted in self-defense during a chaotic moment. His attorney said Austin had no right to put his hands on him and claimed Anthony feared for his safety. But after hearing the evidence, jurors rejected that argument and found Anthony guilty of murder.

The two teenagers reportedly did not know each other before that day. Austin later died after collapsing in the arms of his twin brother, Hunter Metcalf, turning a school sports event into a tragedy that would later divide people across the country.

After the guilty verdict, the defense tried to argue during sentencing that Anthony acted under “sudden passion,” a legal claim that could have reduced his punishment. Jurors rejected that argument too and sentenced him to 35 years in prison.

Outside the courtroom, public attention shifted toward Anthony’s family and the life he appeared to have before the case. Photos shared online showed his parents, Kala and Drew Anthony, with their children at family gatherings, formal events, and near vehicles in suburban neighborhoods.

Some online users began using those images to question the family’s finances, especially after supporters raised hundreds of thousands of dollars through crowdfunding campaigns connected to Anthony’s legal defense and family needs. Others argued that old family photos do not prove anything about a family’s current finances, grief, or private struggles.

Before the case, Anthony had been described by family representatives as a strong student and athlete, with a 3.7 GPA, leadership roles on football and track teams, and part-time jobs. His family said he had no prior criminal history before his arrest and had moved with them from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to North Texas in 2021.

Now those same photos are being viewed through the lens of a case that changed two families forever. For the Metcalf family, Austin’s life was cut short. For the Anthony family, a son once seen in school and family milestones is now beginning a decades-long prison sentence, while the public continues to debate every image, statement, and detail connected to the case.
