U.S. Army Sgt. Isaac Atkins walked onto the America’s Got Talent stage with a voice that had already made him popular online, but it was the encouragement from his fellow soldiers that helped push him into one of the biggest moments of his life.
Atkins, 23, is from Lewiston, Maine, and was stationed in Honolulu when he decided to take leave from the Army to audition for the show. He told the judges he had been serving for six years and had taken a few days off so he could stand in front of Simon Cowell, Mel B, Howie Mandel, and Sofía Vergara.
Before stepping out in front of the judges, Atkins admitted that the audition felt more frightening than some of the intense things he had done in the military. He even joked backstage that jumping out of a plane felt less scary than singing on AGT.
Once he reached the stage, Mel B immediately seemed drawn to his speaking voice. She kept the conversation going, giving him a chance to explain not only who he was, but why he had finally decided to bring his singing beyond social media.
Atkins explained that his singing started in the most ordinary place possible: his car. He said he had been posting videos of himself singing for about a year and a half, and the clips slowly began making their way around online.
Eventually, those videos reached people in his own Army unit. Atkins said his soldiers started recognizing the songs from his TikTok clips and bringing them up at work, even as he tried to play it off like it was not him.
But instead of teasing him away from the dream, they pushed him closer to it. Atkins credited his fellow soldiers with encouraging him to audition, saying they were the ones who urged him to take the chance and sing on the AGT stage.
That detail made the audition feel bigger than a solo performance. By the time Atkins began singing Måneskin’s “Beggin’,” he was not only representing himself, but also the people who had watched his car covers and told him he belonged there.
His performance quickly won over the room. Mel B and Sofía Vergara were visibly enjoying the song, and the audience responded strongly as Atkins brought a soulful edge to the familiar track.
When the performance ended, Mel B did not wait long to make her feelings known. She praised Atkins for his voice and heart, while Vergara also complimented the richness of his tone.
Then Mel B made the moment unforgettable. Before the other judges could fully weigh in, she hit the Golden Buzzer, sending Atkins straight through to the Live Shows as golden confetti fell around him.
After the buzzer, Mel B walked onto the stage to hug him and told him to enjoy the moment because it was his. Atkins later picked up some of the golden confetti as a souvenir from the life-changing audition.
The episode aired during the third night of America’s Got Talent Season 21 auditions on June 16. TV Insider noted that Mel B used her first Golden Buzzer of the season on Atkins, automatically placing him in the Live Shows.
The reaction from fans has focused heavily on the soldiers who believed in him before the judges ever heard him sing. For many viewers, the most touching part was not just that Atkins earned the Golden Buzzer, but that the people around him had seen his gift first and pushed him to stop hiding it.
Now, Isaac Atkins is moving forward on AGT with a military unit, a growing online fanbase, and a Golden Buzzer behind him. What began as car covers shared on TikTok has become a proud moment for the soldiers who encouraged him and a new chapter for the Army sergeant who finally let the world hear his voice.
