Carrie Underwood gave worshippers an unexpected Sunday morning moment when she stepped onto the stage at Rolling Hills Community Church in Franklin, Tennessee, and joined the worship team for a moving rendition of Hillsong Worship’s “What a Beautiful Name.”
The surprise appearance took place during the church’s August 9 service, with Underwood trading the enormous arenas and television stages she is accustomed to for a much more intimate setting.
Dressed casually, Carrie stood alongside members of the church’s worship team and choir as she performed the contemporary Christian favorite. Without the elaborate production usually surrounding one of her concerts, the focus remained almost entirely on her voice and the worship song itself.
Videos recorded by people attending the service quickly began circulating online. Fans praised the simplicity of the performance, while some churchgoers described how powerful it was to unexpectedly hear one of country music’s biggest voices during an ordinary Sunday service.
“What a Beautiful Name” has become one of the most recognizable modern worship songs since its release by Hillsong Worship. Written by Brooke Ligertwood and Ben Fielding, the song became a major success in Christian music and won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song.
But that wasn’t the only music Carrie reportedly performed during the service.
She also joined worship pastor Jennifer Akers for “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” creating another particularly meaningful moment because Carrie previously recorded the traditional hymn with gospel legend CeCe Winans.
For longtime fans, seeing Carrie performing worship music again shouldn’t come as a complete surprise. Christian music has remained closely connected to her career, even as she became one of the biggest mainstream stars in country music.
Carrie has also appeared at Rolling Hills Community Church on previous occasions. Earlier in 2026, she participated in an Easter service, and she has previously performed during Christmas celebrations and other worship gatherings.
One of the hymns particularly associated with her faith-centered performances is “How Great Thou Art.” Her powerful renditions of the classic have attracted millions of viewers over the years and remain among some of her most celebrated vocal performances.
Her biggest commitment to gospel music, however, arrived in 2021 with the release of My Savior.
Rather than filling the project with contemporary country singles, Carrie recorded traditional Christian hymns that had influenced her from childhood. The album included songs such as “Amazing Grace,” “Because He Lives,” “Blessed Assurance,” and her collaboration with CeCe Winans on “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.”
The project became a significant success. My Savior reached the top of the country and Christian album charts and ultimately earned Carrie the Grammy Award for Best Roots Gospel Album.
That history is one reason her newest church appearance has fans wondering whether she could eventually return to the studio for another faith-inspired project.
There has been no announcement of a second gospel album, however, and Carrie’s performance at Rolling Hills should not be taken as confirmation that one is currently being planned. For now, the speculation appears to come largely from fans who would simply like to hear her record more worship music.
Still, the timing has certainly renewed interest. More than five years after My Savior, Carrie continues returning to the hymns and worship songs that have played an important role in her life.
Her latest church appearance also arrives during an extremely busy period professionally. Carrie is preparing for another season performing the opening theme for Sunday Night Football, while continuing the numerous music and television commitments that have kept her in the spotlight.
Yet on this particular Sunday morning, there was no massive football stadium or awards-show production.
Instead, Carrie Underwood stood alongside her local church’s worship team and sang “What a Beautiful Name.” The unexpected performance quickly reminded fans of another side of the superstar—and while nobody knows whether another gospel album will follow, the reaction makes one thing clear: there are plenty of listeners who would welcome one.
