America’s Got Talent Season 21 has officially delivered its first live eliminations, and the results showed just how unforgiving the competition has become. After 11 acts performed during the opening night of the Live Quarterfinals, only three were saved by America’s vote and advanced to the Semifinals.
The three acts celebrating after Wednesday night’s results were Luke Taleno, Olivia Befus and Royal Lasers. Each received enough support from viewers to continue their journey toward the Season 21 finale.
But there was one important twist. Although only three acts advanced through the public vote, another performer had already secured an even bigger advantage the night before.
South Korean magic group Hundred Fingers received Howie Mandel’s Live Golden Buzzer, which sent the group directly to the Season 21 Finals. That meant they didn’t have to wait for Wednesday’s voting results—or even compete in the Semifinals.
Hundred Fingers had already impressed Howie during the audition stage, but their Quarterfinal performance took their act to another level. The group combined close-up magic and sleight of hand with choreography and a much larger presentation, earning an enthusiastic response from the judges.
Howie was so excited that he climbed onto the judges’ desk while trying to reach the Golden Buzzer. He eventually hit it and sent the group directly into the finale, describing what he had witnessed as a performance worthy of the competition’s million-dollar prize.
That left the remaining ten acts relying entirely on viewers.
When host Terry Crews began revealing the results Wednesday, the field quickly narrowed. Luke Taleno emerged as one of the night’s biggest success stories.
The 28-year-old rapper had an unusual history with AGT even before becoming a contestant. He had previously attended the show as an audience member while supporting a friend and reportedly told Simon Cowell that he would return as a contestant.
This season, he did exactly that.
Luke impressed the judges during his earlier appearances and then delivered an original rap during the Quarterfinals. Viewers responded strongly enough to place him among the three acts moving forward.
Olivia Befus also received enough votes to reach the Semifinals, continuing an impressive journey that has made her one of the young performers to watch as the competition moves deeper into the live rounds.
Completing the three was Royal Lasers, whose visually ambitious laser performance managed to stand out in a night featuring singers, comedians, dancers, magicians and other variety acts.
For seven other contestants, however, Wednesday brought disappointing news.
Ashford Sanders, Brook Lynn, Cris Sosa, James & Marina, Jesse White Tumbling Team, Sando and The CommUNITY ATL Choir were all eliminated after failing to secure one of the three available Semifinal positions.
The elimination of James & Marina came after an especially difficult performance night. Simon Cowell buzzed the mentalist duo during their routine and criticized the pacing, while Howie also admitted that he struggled with parts of the performance. Mel B offered considerably more support, but America’s vote ultimately ended their run.
The results demonstrate just how difficult the new stage of Season 21 will be.
A total of 44 acts entered the Live Quarterfinals, divided across four weeks. Eleven perform each week, but America’s vote sends only three from each group into the Semifinals. The Live Golden Buzzer adds another possibility because a judge can send one standout act directly to the Finals.
That means delivering a strong performance is no longer enough. Contestants now have to stand out dramatically from ten other acts while convincing viewers across the country to vote for them.
And the pressure is only beginning.
The next group of 11 Quarterfinalists will take the stage on August 25, followed by another results show on August 26. The process continues until the remaining Semifinalists have been determined, with the Season 21 Semifinals scheduled for September 15.
After the first week, however, four names have already secured important places in the competition: Luke Taleno, Olivia Befus and Royal Lasers are heading to the Semifinals, while Hundred Fingers has jumped past them all and straight into the Finals.
And after seven contestants disappeared from the competition in a single results show, the message to everyone still waiting to perform is clear: one night can completely change an act’s AGT journey.
I can also keep an eye on the remaining Season 21 live results and tell you who advances each week.
