Scotty McCreery has spent much of the past 15 years traveling from city to city, performing for country music fans around the world. But the American Idol winner now admits that his life on the road could soon look very different.
At 32, Scotty isn’t thinking about retirement. In fact, he says the idea of completely walking away from music isn’t something he seriously considers. What he is considering, however, is performing fewer shows so he can spend more time with his family.
The reason is deeply personal: his two young sons are growing up.
Scotty and his wife, Gabi, are parents to Avery and Oliver, and fatherhood has gradually changed the way the singer looks at the demanding schedule that comes with a successful touring career.
Avery will turn four this year and five next year, putting him close to an entirely new stage of childhood filled with school activities, sports and other milestones.
Scotty knows those are moments he doesn’t want to experience through photographs or phone calls from hundreds of miles away.
He explained that Avery will soon begin doing things like Little League and school events, and as that happens, Scotty doesn’t always want to be away performing.
That realization has led him to consider something fans may begin noticing relatively soon: fewer dates on his touring calendar.
“I do ponder doing less shows on the road,” Scotty revealed, adding, “I think that’ll happen pretty soon.”
But he was equally clear about what that statement does not mean.
Scotty isn’t retiring.
He still loves making music, performing with his band, touring and meeting the fans who have supported him since he won American Idol Season 10 in 2011. His goal appears to be finding a different balance rather than ending that part of his career.
And considering just how much he has toured, slowing down would represent a noticeable change.
Scotty said he has performed more than 400 shows over the last few years, a demanding schedule for someone simultaneously trying to be present as a husband and father.
The arrival of Oliver in September 2025 made that balance even more important. Scotty temporarily stepped away from concerts following his second son’s birth before eventually returning to the road.
His family has increasingly become part of the stories behind his music as well.
Scotty recently celebrated 15 years as a recording artist with his retrospective project 15, featuring some of the songs that have defined his career alongside new recordings. He’s also been discussing new music inspired by the experiences he’s having at this stage of his life.
So fans shouldn’t interpret his latest comments as a farewell announcement.
Instead, they may be an early indication of how Scotty wants the next 15 years of his career to look.
There can still be albums, concerts, Grand Ole Opry appearances and nights spent singing to thousands of fans. There may simply be fewer nights away from home.
And for a singer whose emotional hit “Five More Minutes” centers on wishing precious moments could last a little longer, there is something especially fitting about his decision.
Scotty McCreery isn’t ready to leave the stage. He simply doesn’t want life on the road to make him miss the moments happening at home while his boys are growing up.
