Carrie Underwood transformed her August 29 concert at Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts, into an emotional celebration of Dolly Parton, delivering a moving performance of “See You Again” only days after the country legend’s p/a/ssing at age 80.
Before beginning the song, Carrie stopped the show to speak from the heart about Dolly and the enormous impact she had on both country music and the people lucky enough to know her personally.
Carrie described Dolly as one of her greatest influences and also remembered her as one of the kindest people she had ever met. She admitted that the loss still felt almost impossible to process, saying it seemed as though the entire world had briefly stood still.
She also reflected on Dolly’s famous positivity, warmth and faith, telling the audience that although Dolly was gone, the influence she left behind would continue far beyond her lifetime.
Rather than performing one of Dolly’s own classics, Carrie chose “See You Again,” her emotional 2013 hit about holding onto the hope of being reunited with someone who is no longer here. She explained that the song felt especially appropriate for the moment.
Then Carrie asked everyone in the audience to take out their phones and turn on their flashlights in Dolly’s memory.
Within moments, thousands of tiny lights began glowing throughout the venue, surrounding the stage as Carrie started singing. What had been an ordinary concert setting suddenly became a massive visual tribute to Dolly.
As the song reached its final section, the tribute became even more emotional when a large black-and-white photograph of Dolly appeared behind Carrie on the screen.
