Carrie Underwood surprised fans at the Velocity Festival in Dyersville, Iowa, when her headlining performance took an unexpected turn away from country music and into the world of rock and nu-metal.
The September 5 performance took place at the Field of Dreams Movie Site, where Underwood became the first female artist to headline a show at the iconic location.
At first, the concert looked much like fans might expect from an Underwood show. She performed several of her well-known country hits, including “Before He Cheats,” “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” “Cowboy Casanova” and “Blown Away.”
Then the mood suddenly changed.
Underwood launched into a series of rock covers that caught many people in the audience off guard. Her set included Collective Soul’s “Shine,” Papa Roach’s “Scars,” Linkin Park’s “One Step Closer” and Limp Bizkit’s “Break Stuff.”
The Limp Bizkit performance became one of the most talked-about moments of the night. Underwood even appeared wearing a backward red baseball cap as a playful nod to Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst.
Fan-recorded clips from the performance quickly began circulating online, giving viewers who were not at the festival a chance to see the unexpected side of the country superstar.
The rock-heavy portion of the concert did not come completely out of nowhere. Before taking the stage, Underwood revealed that she had arrived early enough to watch Shinedown perform at the festival. She said the experience inspired her to try something new during her own set.
That decision clearly paid off in terms of creating a memorable concert moment. Instead of simply sticking to the songs audiences already knew, Underwood used the festival setting to showcase another side of her musical personality.
She also performed Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child o’ Mine,” adding another major rock classic to an already surprising set.
Underwood has never hidden her appreciation for rock music. Throughout her career, she has performed with and alongside major rock artists, including Guns N’ Roses, Aerosmith, Mötley Crüe and Papa Roach.
Still, seeing the country superstar move through songs associated with Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park and Papa Roach in the same concert was enough to leave many fans surprised. Some praised her willingness to step outside her usual style, while others debated the unexpected song choices online.
The performance ultimately showed that Carrie Underwood does not necessarily have to choose between country and rock. At Velocity Festival, she brought both sides together — delivering the country hits that made her famous before turning the stage into an energetic rock celebration that fans are still talking about.
