“The Voice” is preparing some of its biggest format changes in years as the NBC singing competition celebrates its milestone 30th season. Along with a refreshed coaching panel, producers are changing everything from the Blind Auditions to the way viewers vote during the Live Shows.
Season 30 brings Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine back to the red chairs, while Queen Latifah and country star Riley Green join the competition as first-time Coaches. Carson Daly also returns as host when the new season begins September 21.
One of the biggest changes arrives immediately during the Blind Auditions. The familiar Block is being replaced by a new feature called the First-In Button, which rewards a Coach for recognizing an Artist’s talent before everyone else.
If several Coaches turn for the same singer, the Coach who turned first can activate the First-In Button and automatically secure that Artist for their team. Each Coach gets to use the advantage only once, making the timing of the decision especially important.
Another major addition is Cut Week, which NBC describes as the biggest elimination stage in the show’s history. Each Coach will select two Artists to advance directly to the Live Shows, while five other members of the team compete for one remaining position.
Once those decisions are complete, 12 Artists will have secured places in the live competition. Viewers then get an opportunity to save one additional Artist, creating a Top 13 for the Live Shows.
The Live Shows themselves are also getting a significant expansion. Season 30 will feature six weeks of live performances, the longest live-show stretch “The Voice” has offered in five years and a major change after Season 29 featured no live episodes.
Fan voting will work differently as well. Instead of waiting overnight for results, viewers will vote during the live broadcast and discover that same night which Artists are moving forward, creating a much faster elimination process.
NBC is also introducing new ways to cast those votes. Fans will be able to participate through SMS text messaging or TikTok, while the Live Shows will be simulcast on NBC and Peacock across U.S. time zones for the first time.
TikTok will play an even larger role throughout the season through a new partnership with the program. The platform will provide behind-the-scenes content and companion broadcasts, and “The Voice” will even feature a dedicated TikTok-themed episode.
The six-week live run will introduce other themed episodes too. NBC has confirmed Dolly Parton Tribute Week and Y2K alongside the TikTok theme, giving the remaining Artists opportunities to perform across different musical eras and styles.
“The Voice” Season 30 begins with a three-night premiere event starting Monday, September 21 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC, followed by additional episodes September 22 and 23. With the First-In Button, Cut Week, Top 13 twist, six weeks of Live Shows and same-night voting, the milestone season is combining a return to the show’s roots with some of its most substantial rule changes in years.
