“The Voice” is bringing several major changes to its milestone 30th season, but one unexpected change happened before the premiere. The show’s standalone official app has been removed from mobile app stores, taking away an interactive feature many longtime viewers had used while watching the competition.
The free app was separate from the regular NBC app and allowed viewers to participate in the show in ways that went beyond simply watching episodes. Even people who previously downloaded it reportedly will not be able to use its interactive functions during Season 30.
One of the app’s most recognizable features allowed fans to behave like virtual Coaches during the Blind Auditions. Viewers could decide which singers they would turn their chairs for while comparing their decisions with those made by the actual Coaches.
Fans could also create their own fantasy teams. As Artists moved through the Battles and Knockouts, viewers could follow their selections and see how well their personal teams performed throughout the competition.
The app included other interactive elements as well, including polls, trivia and additional content connected to the show. For dedicated viewers, it provided a second-screen experience that made watching “The Voice” feel more interactive.
Its disappearance therefore caught some longtime fans by surprise, especially because Season 30 is otherwise being promoted as a season that gives viewers a larger role. Reports about the removal have highlighted confusion from fans who expected the app to remain part of the viewing experience.
There is also an unusual detail surrounding the change. Although the standalone app has disappeared from mobile app stores, references to it reportedly remained on parts of NBC’s online material, adding to the uncertainty about why it was discontinued.
As of the weekend before the Season 30 premiere, NBC had not publicly provided a detailed explanation for ending the standalone app. That means claims about exactly why it was removed should be treated cautiously unless the network provides additional information.
However, losing the app does not mean viewers are losing their ability to influence the actual competition. Season 30 is bringing back six weeks of Live Shows, the longest stretch of live competition “The Voice” has featured in five years.
Voting is also being redesigned. During the Live Shows, fans will be able to support their favorite Artists through SMS text messages and through the show’s official TikTok presence, with voting taking place in real time.
Another major change is that results will be revealed during the same broadcast. The Live Shows will also be simulcast on NBC and Peacock across U.S. time zones, allowing viewers to follow the performances and participate during the designated voting window.
So while “The Voice” is saying goodbye to one of its familiar digital features, Season 30 is actually becoming more interactive where the competition itself is concerned. When the new season premieres September 21 with Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, Queen Latifah and Riley Green, fans may no longer have the old app experience—but they will soon have six weeks of live performances and a much more immediate role in deciding which Artists advance.
