The Voice is making major changes for Season 30, introducing new rules that could dramatically affect how coaches build their teams and how quickly contestants are eliminated. The milestone season will feature a new Blind Auditions advantage, a radically different elimination round and new ways for viewers to vote.
One of the biggest changes arrives during the Blind Auditions with the introduction of the “First-In Button.” When multiple coaches turn for the same artist, the coach who turned first can use the button to automatically claim that contestant before the artist gets the opportunity to choose a coach.
There is an important limitation, however. Each coach can use the First-In Button only once during the season, meaning Adam Levine, Kelly Clarkson, Queen Latifah and Riley Green will have to decide carefully when the advantage is worth using. The new rule could add another strategic element to an already competitive stage of the competition.
The biggest shake-up comes later with what NBC is calling “Cut Week,” described as the biggest elimination in The Voice history. Instead of gradually moving contestants forward through the usual process, the coaches will make much more consequential decisions about their teams in a compressed round.
During Cut Week, each coach will send two artists directly into the Live Shows. Five other artists on each team will then compete for one remaining place, meaning several singers will be fighting for a single opportunity to continue.
Once those decisions are made, the competition will establish a Top 12 before viewers get another major role. America will then vote one additional contestant into the Live Shows, creating a Top 13 and giving fans the power to alter the final lineup.
The changes continue once the Live Shows begin. Season 30 brings back six weeks of live performances, with themed weeks including a Dolly Parton tribute, Y2K and TikTok. The season will also introduce new ways for viewers to participate in the voting process.
Fans will be able to vote through text messaging and TikTok, while the Live Shows will be simulcast on NBC and Peacock in all time zones. There is an important catch: according to TVLine, only votes submitted during the original East Coast broadcast will count, despite the broader simulcast availability.
The new format arrives alongside a refreshed coaching panel. Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine return as veteran coaches, while Queen Latifah and Riley Green make their coaching debuts.
