Stephen Ogilvie, the 44-year-old victim of a serious stabbing in north Belfast, is reportedly showing early signs of improvement as he remains in hospital recovering from life-threatening injuries. His family has shared a hopeful update, saying doctors may soon begin the careful process of bringing him out of an induced coma.
Mr Ogilvie was injured during a knife attack on Monday evening, leaving his loved ones devastated and the wider community deeply shaken. He remains under medical care, but relatives say there is now hope that his condition is moving in a better direction.
The update was shared publicly after DUP leader Gavin Robinson and North Belfast MLA Phillip Brett met with Mr Ogilvie’s family. Robinson said Stephen’s parents had asked him to pass on the message that their son remains in an induced coma, but that his condition is improving.
According to the family’s update, doctors may be able to start bringing Stephen out of the coma within the next 24 to 48 hours. While that news has brought some comfort, his relatives have also made clear that he still faces a long and difficult recovery.
Phillip Brett said the family wanted people to know there is now a strong hope around Stephen’s condition. He also said they are grateful for the support, sympathy, and concern they have received from people across the community during such a painful time.

At the same time, officials have warned about false and distressing content being shared online. Robinson said the family has already been broken by what happened to Stephen, and that misinformation, including fake images and AI-generated material, has made their pain even worse.
He urged people to show dignity and restraint, asking the public not to share rumors, speculation, or fabricated content while the family focuses on Stephen’s recovery. For his loved ones, the priority remains his health, his safety, and the long road ahead.
The attack has also led to unrest in parts of Belfast, with police maintaining a strong presence as tensions remain high. Community leaders and officials have repeatedly called for calm, warning that more violence will only create more suffering.
Stephen’s family has also made a direct plea for peace, saying they do not want retaliation or disorder in his name. Their message is that violence will not help Stephen, will not comfort those who love him, and will not bring justice any closer.
As the investigation continues, police have confirmed that a suspect has appeared in court facing serious charges connected to the attack. For now, Belfast remains on alert, but Stephen Ogilvie’s family is asking people to focus on his recovery, respect the truth, and allow justice to take its course.
