“The Voice” Season 30 has barely begun, but 19-year-old Marcus Ladden Jr. has already given viewers a performance that has some talking about how far he could go. The Atlanta, Georgia singer walked into his Blind Audition with confidence and delivered a theatrical take on Michael Bublé’s “Cry Me a River.”
From the opening moments, Marcus showed that he was interested in doing more than simply standing behind a microphone and singing the notes. His performance leaned into drama, personality and stage presence, giving the song the feeling of a complete show rather than a straightforward cover.
That approach quickly caught Kelly Clarkson’s attention. Clarkson turned her chair, and Queen Latifah followed, giving Marcus two Coaches who clearly saw potential in what the teenager was doing onstage.
Adam Levine and Riley Green ultimately stayed facing away, but Marcus continued building the performance through its ending. Coverage of the audition particularly highlighted his theatrical opening, vocal ability and strong finish.
Once the song ended, Clarkson made it clear that Marcus had impressed her as more than just a vocalist. She praised both his singing and his ability to entertain, telling him she wanted him on her team “so badly.”
Clarkson also had a unique connection to Marcus because she knew what it was like to enter a major television singing competition at 19. During her pitch, she reminded him of her own competition history and her four previous wins as a Coach on “The Voice.”
Queen Latifah, however, connected with another side of Marcus. She told him that his performance had reached her emotionally and emphasized the artistic connection she felt with him. Their shared experience with musical theater also gave Latifah a compelling argument for why she could understand the type of performer he wants to become.
That theatrical side of Marcus did not appear overnight. Before “The Voice,” he attended Pebblebrook High School in the Atlanta area and was heavily involved in musical theater. He has also trained and performed through Broadway Dreams Atlanta, including being selected for showcases in New York City.
Marcus is also a singer, actor and dancer, which helps explain why his Blind Audition felt so performance-driven. His background suggests he has spent years developing not only his voice but also the ability to communicate a song physically and dramatically onstage.
He had already started attracting an online audience before appearing on “The Voice.” Reporting ahead of the premiere noted that Marcus had nearly 19,000 TikTok followers and more than 1.5 million likes, with some of his musical and character-driven videos attracting hundreds of thousands—or even more than a million—views.
When the time finally came to choose between Clarkson and Latifah, Marcus went with Team Queen. Latifah’s combination of music, acting and theatrical experience appeared to make her a natural match for a young performer whose ambitions extend beyond simply being a strong vocalist.
It is still extremely early in Season 30, so nobody knows how far Marcus will ultimately travel in the competition. But after one performance, he has already shown why some viewers are excited about his potential: a big voice, natural showmanship, years of theater experience and the confidence to take on a song associated with Michael Bublé at only 19. Whether he reaches the finale remains to be seen, but Marcus Ladden Jr. has certainly given “The Voice” fans a reason to remember his name.
